A very Bobby Brady sequel

Here’s an idea I just can’t get excited about: Vince Vaughn as an adult Bobby Brady.

Here’s an idea I just can’t get excited about.

Vince Vaughn as an adult Bobby Brady in yet another spin-off of a television classic?

I love me some Bradys and we’ve had plenty already: Brady Brides, The Bradys, The Brady Kids, The Brady Bunch Variety Hour (now why don’t they revive that?), A Very Brady Christmas telemovie and the Brady movies.

But seriously, a multicamera comedy featuring Bobby as a divorced dad who remarries and starts a new family? Unless it has its tongue planted firmly in its apple pie cheeks then I’m not at all enthused.

The script is to be written by Raising Hope‘s Mike Mariano and Lloyd Schwartz, son of the late Sherwood Schwartz, is due to co-produce.

The new series will also include Bobby and his new bride’s exes, their kids from previous marriages and a shared child (Modern Family anyone?).

Revivals and reboots abound on the screen: Dallas, The Munsters, Beauty & The Beast, Charlie’s Angels and more. It’s hard to think of any that enjoy any kind of sustained life, although Hawaii Five-0 is making a fair go of it in the US, if not in Australia.

The Brady Bunch Movie had 2 sequels because it was such an inspired reimagining. It was an affectionate parody of a very twee original, and carefully shifted its focus to all the subtext: perfect Marcia and stud Greg sexually frustrated, paranoid Jan always in the shadow of her elder sister, Alice suppressing all manner of secret desires in her private boudoir, and a perfectly cast Shelley Long as the all-American mom, solving everything with a gleaming-white smile.

If there’s no astroturf in this remake they might as well give up before they start…

  1. Ugh. Bobby Brady was so cute and Vince Vaughn is so…not.

I do wish eleven could mix episodes of The Brady Kids and The Brady Brides with their 5.30 screenings. It would be good to add to the episode count of the original series. (The Brady Kids was a cartoon version, but still be fun to watch).

  2. The test should always be. If the show was not a spin off, would it be successful and worthy to make.

This seems so pointless, it seems to fail that test.

  3. I have to agree, this doesn’t sound good at all but on the bright side at least the son of the original Brady Bunch creator is part of it.

I have actually never seen all those spinoffs like The Brady Kids, The Brady Brides etc but would love to and would be something unique and interesting to show on the digital channels.

I do remember A Very Brady Christmas though that Ten used to show almost every year years ago. What an excellent TV movie that was, just a shame they couldn’t get the original Cindy to be in it!
