Airdate: House Husbands

No surprises here, Nine has slated its new drama series for the slot warmed up by the Howzat! miniseries.

No surprises here, Nine has slated its new drama series House Husbands to premiere Sunday, September 2, at 8.30pm on Channel Nine.

It will take up the slot which has been warmed up by the Howzat! miniseries.

Fresh, funny and entertaining, the series centres on four young families with one thing in common: the men are in charge of raising the kids.

It’s the beginning of a new school year and recently retired Lewis (Gary Sweet) finds himself in the unfamiliar role of stay-at-home dad to Tilda, his daughter with nurse Gemma (Julia Morris).

Gemma works at the hospital with her best friend Abi (Natalie Saleeba) whose husband Mark (Rhys Muldoon) is juggling a return to part-time work and looking after five-year-old Poppy.

Mark’s brother-in-law Kane (Gyton Grantley) is in a relationship with Tom (Tim Campbell), raising Tom’s orphaned niece Stella.

When dropping their daughters off on the first day of school, the three men meet Justin (Firass Dirani), a former AFL star who, thanks to his bad boy ways, has seen his career and family walk out the door. He is now facing the fight of his life to win custody of his twin boys Zac and Jacob and eight-month-old daughter Angie.

Finding themselves severely outnumbered by all the mothers at the school drop-off zone, the four men band together and help each other along as they face the challenges of raising a young family.

Anna McGahan, Leah Di Niese and Nicholas Coghlan round out the stellar Aussie cast in this exciting new series that throws out the rule book and explores the new way modern families are doing things.

Filmed on location in Melbourne, House Husbands was created by Ellie Beaumont and Drew Proffitt, is produced by Drew Proffit and Sue Seeary and executive produced by David Taylor and David Maher for the Nine Network.

  1. I too think the cast sounds great! I am apprehensive since TB was treated so poorly and other Aussie and International shows have suffered poor programming. It is a matter of take a punt and be surprised or disappointed again!
No matter your view the Aussie drama industry needs support from viewers and networks. I realise the quality of storyline, casting, production and acting needs to be appealing.

  2. My concern is that it will be similar to Tricky Business. I tried to give TB a chance but I couldn’t believe Gigi Edgley in the lead or as a mum. I felt she was miscast and it was distracting for me. Promos do look slightly more promising here and the real draw card for me is Julia Morris. TB storyline seemed to get bogged down in it’s own conventions and it made the show seem like it was chasing its own tail. Fingers crossed House Husbands shows us a lighter and more cohesive dramedy. Channel 9 has been building momentum this year and I’m watching the ratings war intently.

  3. I like the concept, hate the name and the ads shown seem to be off on the humour . Is this a drama or comedy? Hopefully this does better than Tricky Business.

  4. I’m tentatively looking forward to it. This could be really good or it could be another soapie. It looks like a great cast so will definately be watching at the beginning.
