Behind the scenes of The Circle’s last episode

Video: Don't miss this wonderful tribute to the cast and crew of The Circle, poetically captured during its last ever show.

It may have only been a morning chat show but the loss of The Circle has resonated deeply with those who were working on it.

One of the lighting directors, Sam Hardeman, has created an inspiring tribute to those in front of and behind the cameras.

It gives a wonderful insight to what goes into creating television (and suggests Mr. Hardeman should be doing a lot more than Lighting!). I’ve now watched this several times and I didn’t even work on the show.

TV Tonight has also received emails from Circle crew who say they have worked for all the channels but nothing matches the bond they felt on this team. Another testament to Pam Barnes no doubt….

  1. Its odd, really. A show like this is very easy to dismiss if you only ever saw a small chunk or perhaps heard of via the Yumi gaffe. A lot of us like to dismiss daytime tv as moving wallpaper. However to the people that did tune in and the people who worked on it, it was a lot more. It was 3 hours hanging with smart, honest, inquisitive unpredictable women who were smart – and most importantly – they assumed you were too. For people at home, it was something more akin to radio than tv – its was friendship, and company.

I worked on the show from the very beginning as a guest and, look, i’ll be honest I mostly agreed at the beginning because I was interested in learning how to do live tv… but pretty soon The Circle became the highlight of my working week. It was a perfect mix of extremely experienced tv makers and as you can see in the video an awful lot of young Melbourne talent. The grief expressed in the video may seem over the top for some but for those that worked on it, it sums up the experience quite nicely. The best analogy for the axing of the Circle I can offer is that it’s the working equivalent of knowing someone young, lively and in their prime and having them ripped away. Compare that to say the passing of GMA (someone old, who’s lived a full life and crossed to Moira more times than they could count) Its as much shock as it is grief.

  2. Fantastic work Mr. Hardeman very well shot, lovely editing and a delicate piece of audio mixing….. I was never a fan of the Circle but don’t think it should have gone at the expense of keeping Breakfast. I hope all behind the scenes are working again soon

  3. I really believe that someone who is smart in the TV industry will give these people another go. It would make a good Midday fit for Seven or maybe Nine. It seems like Ten are slowly killing off any show that is not right wing. The project was doing good figures at 7pm, then it was moved. Why? Maybe to get it off the air and replace it with Bolt or Price. Why keep breakfast and dump The Circle. Yes, maybe another conspiracy theory but the question has to be asked.

  4. steviep – Why would you write such a negative and disparaging comment? If you are not interested in The Circle, simply don’t read the article.

Personally, I felt the video to be very moving.

I would still like to understand why Ten chose to drop the ball on a Logie award-winning show in 2012 (beginning with the failure to cast permanent replacements for Denise and Chrissie)… It might even do Ten some good to at least explain its decision.

  5. I loved this. I saw Gorgi tweet it yesterday. Its so nice to see so many people love what they do. I miss the show. And I can’t see it ever coming back to be honest.

  6. Oh woweeey
more time wasted on this shot 4 people a day use to watch.

I know you are obsessed with this show but its dead let go find something else to obsess over.

  7. I was really moved by this. It strikes me that those who work in Television in Australia are a dedicated and hard working group of people who are likely under appreciated and certainly not in it for the money.

And indeed there a far fewer jobs than people who are looking for work in within the Australian media industry. An industry that is not known for it’s stability of work. And how frustrating it must be that your future is determined by OZTam’s ratings sample.

Hats off to all those involved in the production of The Circle.
