Final two housemates enter Big Brother

Big Brother may well have kept the best until last...

Big Brother may well have kept the best until last.

Last night the final two housemates entered the Big Brother house:

Ray: 25, a Veterinarian from Queensland.
Ray confesses to not being the smartest guy in high school, but studied up to 15 hours a day to get through what is one of the most demanding university courses there is. He loves animals and runs his own veterinary business specialising in house calls. Ray works out every day, but hasn’t always been fit. He is single and addicted to chocolate milk.

Benjamin: 32, an Accounts Manager from Victoria.
Benjamin spends his day on the phone selling vouchers, and was recently head-hunted by a rival company who learned of his reputation as a man with a serious gift of the gab. He is quick witted, but says “you have to be loud to be heard and get your way”. Benjamin has a habit of looking for food while sleepwalking and once bit into a bar of soap while wandering in the dark.

From the moment Ray entered the house it was clear he had attitude, and was soon being reprimanded by Big Brother, including a moment in the “naughty corner” writing lines on a blackboard. It was fun to see BB exert his authority.

Ray appears to have been cast for conflict, and his inclusion added some much-needed spark amongst the current housemates. His sexuality also hasn’t been clearly defined yet.

He was followed by openly gay Ben, who described himself as “a bitch.” There was also some tension from Ben, after calling Michael a ‘bogan.’ Hopefully there is more to him than just an unlikeable gay man….

Now that we have all 14 housemates it is fair to ask whether Nine reinvented the casting in the way that it promised? We are low on diversity, with far too many young Caucasians spending a lot of time about who is hottest, just as other seasons have done. In the lead-up to the series both promos and interviews led us to believe there would be a mix of ages. I was beginning to despair, but the inclusion of Ray has lifted my spirits somewhat.

Now the risk will be that he could be evicted first…

  1. They say there’s legal reasons for not having a live stream. For ratings. Which is nonsense. Laws been the same since before the last season.

I can understand with the stupid way the law is pointing when it comes to online space and defamation they might have issues.

They need to compromise. Whether they do uplate. And /or even start putting up longer videos on the official site.

You watch a 2 minute clip of a conversation. It’s interesting. Yet you get no context, how it started or where it goes. It’s a tease, but with a short daily show, it’ll never be satisfied. May never be on the show or explained.

They need extended footage. It doesn’t matter if it’s not properly edited or a slick sound bite.

None of us will sit here and watch a live stream 24/7. Still give us 20 minutes from every couple of hours, even if nothing overly interesting has happened.

Nine’s mitigation of annoyance at this issue is inadequate at best. It’s like the twitter, where most of the updates could literally just say, “HMs are currently inside the house.” For all the insight they give.

  2. We need Live Streaming!
If we can’t have that, we need Uplate!
If we don’t get either, we can’t possibly get to know the housemates, on a diet of 20 edited mins a day!!

  3. re ‘the unlikeable gay bloke’ yeah I agree with David, he appears to be yet another cliched stereotype gay bloke who broadcast his sexuality and then whinged that people thought he was the gay bloke…..durrr….the girls picked up on it in the first ten seconds….so yeah classic sterotype…Still it could make for entertaining viewing if/when he and others clash

  4. It was so disappointing to not have Uplate ( or some form of it) on again this week as we could have seen them enter the house live.

It really seems 9 is holding back. They now have Big Brother, they have three channels to choose from why can’t they have Uplate on again regularly. I’m sure it will beat the ratings of whatever else is on there currently.

We’re just really missing out on knowing about the housemate this year if they don’t bring back Uplate on a daily basis.

  5. Crap I didn’t mean Ryan, i meant Ray. Ray is horrible but entertaining.

Ryan is eh. He won’t last long. I find the confusing over what degree he has kind of amusing. It’s a Commerce (Commercial Law) degree. I’ve seen mentions on the show as if it’s a double degree, as if it’s Commerce / Law. Which it is not. They take about 5 years and much harder to get into.

Saying his Commerce degree is Commercial Law is a way to make it sound more impressive.

  6. I think with Ben, he’s labelled himself as the “gay housemate.” Or he just came in thinking of himself as that. Look at the interactions with Michael.

On the new people, Ben, eh whatever. Ryan was horrible but damn entertaining. It actually relieved some worries I had about the show.

However this was the first proper show we’ve had. Nine made a big mistake by not having daily shows for several days. We’ve missed an important time in the house. Have not seen the relationships and groups forming.

  7. Yeah, agreed with the last part of the article David, I was super excited by the potential that CH9 offered during there promotion of diverse housemates before the series started. But now im kinda disappointed by the housemates it seems much the same so far…

Im interested to see how the new nomination system will work this year, and am I right to say that BB put around 20 housemates in lockdown? so weather or not these HM’s are still reserves or intruders or in another part of the house, like BB teased in the 1st ep (secret door in the bedroom) or they were simply released. Hopefully there is some older diverse people in that bunch.

  8. David – I’m disappointed that you called Ben an ‘unlikeable gay man”.

People could be unlikeable – gay or not.

I don’t see you calling George an unlikeable straight man or Zoe an unlikeable straight woman.

Please try to stick to the housemate’s personalities and not their sexual orientation.

    Thank you.

    1. Bettestreep: Reality shows have a history of stereotyping gay men as villains and bitchy queens (note the way Johnny quickly became ‘Johnny Rotten’ in BB S1). I’m nervous that Benjamin will fill that role in 2012, already admitting to some of these traits himself. But I hope to be pleasantly surprised. While I have your attention, please avoid SHOUTING CAPS in your comments as per Comments Policy as I won’t be editing these for you from here on. Trust this makes sense, thanks.

  9. I gave channel nine 15 minutes on Tuesday to grab my attention for the new BB… but they failed.
Young people, all the same, yammering on about nothing.
Maybe I was silly to expect any different.
Sonia was the most interesting thing… that was a shock.
So, once again channel nine lost me…

  10. Ray will be great to watch, so will Benjamin. I’m a bit disappointed that there isn’t more of a diverse age range though. But so far, so good for BB2012.

  11. 15 years separates the youngest and oldest HMs, aged 18 and 33. That seems very undiverse. But, ignoring for now the rumor some of them were hired from talent agencies, they can only cast from those who audition, and I’m sure it would have been something like 19,000 auditionees between 18 and 33, and 1,000 older. So if they cast solely on personality, it’s likely 14 were chosen from the younger age range.

Speaking of personality, while they might all have different jobs, beliefs and lifestyles, they are definitely all loud outgoing personalities. Even Bradley who would appear meek is very loud and bubbly. Charne is already complaining everyone talks over each other. I think it’s a battle to be heard at the moment.

As far as diversity goes BB08 probably hit the mark more than any other season, with the grandma, the litte person, the UFO nut, Corey Worthington, and others, but then they were accused of stunt casting, and their band of HMs were labelled “freaks” by the media in the first week.

    You just can’t win!

  12. Well the final 2 definitely live up to the ‘love to hate tag’ which means they must be kept in the house by voters who want an interesting series. No conflict equals dull. I always find white blokes with dreadlocks to be dull, boring, tossers, so George the millionaire would be the first one to get the boot for me. The girls have failed to make much of an impact…..
