Another UK comedy is headed for a US remake. This time it’s Jo Brand’s public hospital satire, Getting On, most recently seen in Australia on ABC1.
HBO has given a pilot order to a US adaptation from from Big Love creators Mark V. Olsen & Will Scheffer.
The series was created by Jo Brand, Joanna Scanlan and Vicki Pepperdine, who all appeared in the BBC Four comedy as nurses and administrators caring for the elderly in a struggling public hospital. They will remain as exec producers on the US series with Jane Tranter and Julie Gardner also as executive producers.
Olsen and Scheffer said, “When we proposed the reformat to BBC Worldwide and HBO, the issues in elder care were very personal to both of us; Mark’s and my mother were in their 90s and attending to their care had come to be a big part of our lives,” Scheffer said. “Getting On nailed that world with its deadpan humor and deep humanity.”
There were only 9 episodes of the BBC series but a third is being filmed with guest stars Hugh Bonneville and Tilda Swinton.

Always confused as to why Americans can’t just watch the original program and enjoy it? It’s not as if they have a record of great remakes.
Usually i’m against remakes but i’ve loved being human. And HBO is always good so count me in!
It’s on HBO huh? Should be good. My dream casting would be Margo Martindale.
Anything from HBO is good. Can’t wait 🙂
Can’t wait for the next series of the British version. Can wait for US version though.
