Olympics: Day 10 on Nine

Today Sally Pearson makes her debut in the 100m hurdles.

Today there is Gold to be decided in athletics, track cycling, gymnastics, sailing, shooting, weightlifting, wrestling and the equestrian discipline of jumping.  Sally Pearson makes her debut in the 100m hurdles.

This session may include:

Basketball – 6pm*
The Boomers’ play their fifth and final preliminary round match against a formidable opponent, Russia. It’s a must-win match to determine their placing in the quarter-finals.

Canoeing – Sprint – 6.50pm*
The program begins with heats and semi-finals in four events, with Australia expected to be one of the stronger squads competing. In the men’s K1 Sydneysider Murray Stewart will compete, while Brisbane’s Jake Donaghey will contest the men’s C1. Dave Smith joins forces with Ken Wallace in the men’s K2 over 1000m. In the women’s K4, raced over 500m, Australia enters Hannah Davis, Lyndsie Fogarty, Jo Brigden-Jones and Rachel Lovell.

Athletics-7pm*
Australia’s 2011 world champion Sally Pearson makes her debut in the first round of the women’s 100m hurdles. Pearson enters as the gold medal favourite and has been in outstanding form this season.

Australia will have three starters in the men’s discus: Beijing Olympian and 2006 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Scott Martin, Benn Harradine, a finalist at the 2011 world championships, and first-time Olympian Julian Wruck. World champion Robert Harting of Germany will be the man to beat.

On the track, Jeff Riseley will run his opening heat in the 800m while Zoe Buckman and Kaila McKnight start their 1500m campaigns in the heats.

Shooting
The shooting program winds up at Royal Artillery Barracks with the final two gold medals to be decided. Dual Olympic gold medallist Michael Diamond is in first position after the first round of qualifying. Team-mate Adam Vella, a 2008 bronze medallist, is in 27th place after the qualifying. Competitors will have 50 more targets to face en route to the final.
As well, Australia’s Dane Sampson will resume his campaign in the men’s 50m rifle three position.

Water Polo
This shapes as a crucial match for the Sharks. The final men’s preliminary water polo game sees Australia in the pool against Greece. The top four nations in each group advance to the quarter-finals.

Equestrian
Edwina Tops-Alexander, Julia Hargreaves and James Robinson contest the third round in jumping and will be hoping for clear rounds.
Gymnastics
It’s finals time in the individual apparatus events for the men in the rings and vault. The women will contest the uneven bars.

Volleyball
In their last preliminary match in the men’s volleyball the Aussies meet the powerhouse Polish team. Poland is regarded as one of the strongest teams in Europe and a potential finalist. The top eight teams in the 12-team competition advance to the quarter-finals.

Sailing
Australia’s Tom Slingsby is in with a great chance of winning a gold medal in the men’s Laser event. Entering the final day of racing he is in first place.

Athletics – 3.50am*
Five of the 42 athletics gold medals will be decided today.

Australian teenager Steven Solomon has made the final of the men’s 400m and will give it his best shot for a medal. It’s the first time Australia has had a starter in the Olympic men’s 400m final since Darren Clark in 1988.

On the field, Aussie Alana Boyd has made the final of the women’s pole vault, where she will compete with Russia’s two-time gold medallist and world record holder Yelena Isinbayeva.

Other highlights include the final of the men’s 400m hurdles and the women’s 3000m steeplechase.

The women’s shot put final is scheduled along with semi-finals of the women’s 400m hurdles, with Lauren Boden of Australia seeking to advance to the final, plus heats of the women’s 200m.

Diving
With wins on the men’s 3m springboard in Rostock and Montreal in 2012, Aussie Ethan Warren has made a statement in the lead-up to London 2012 and will be hoping to make the semi-final round.

Hockey
The last of the five preliminary round matches for the Hockeyroos is a replay of the Sydney 2000 women’s gold medal final, with Australia up against the world number two, Argentina.

Shooting
At his sixth Olympics, Australian trap shooter Michael Diamond will be hoping to take aim at a third gold medal. He was well placed after the first day of competition.

Synchronised Swimming
The Australian pair of Eloise Amberger and Sarah Bombell take part in the free routine preliminaries at the Aquatics Centre.

6.00am-9.00am on Nine and GEM
As Day 10 of competition continues, Cameron Williams and Leila McKinnon host the morning shift. It will include live action and a review of major events.

9.00am-11.00am London Gold on Nine and GEM
Mark Nicholas looks back on the highlights of another great day at London 2012. The program includes the best of gold medal action and a wrap of the Aussies at the Olympics.

  1. just watched the Boomers play against Russia and they won. This puts them on three wins and two losses. The loss to Spain in there second match which was big really hurt the team, i think that they may be able to avoid the US in the cross quarter finals but Argentina will need to beat them which is a tough call. Still good news.
