Shire stars in “shopping centre catfight”

Update: Shire cast members Vernessa and Sophie are shaken following an incident today. ACA is to screen a video of a knife attack.

Two cast members of The Shire were involved in an altercation at Rhodes shopping centre today.

Vernesa Toroman and Sophie Kalantzis are understood to be shaken but ok following the incident at the shopping centre food court this afternoon.

“There was a minor altercation with someone receiving minor cuts and bruises,” a police spokesperson said.

The Daily Telegraph speculates that Toroman may have sustained a knife injury following the catfight that erupted around 12noon between a group of girls.

She was reported to have been treated at a Rhodes medical centre.

There are reports the issue may have stemmed from a personal vendetta with another woman who had reportedly posted the girls’ number on social media networks.

A spokesperson from Shine declined to comment until full details were evident.

UPDATE: A Current Affair has obtained exclusive video of a knife attack and bashing of The Shire stars Vernesa and Sophie at a Sydney shopping centre. The footage will feature in a special report tonight on A Current Affair tonight at 6:30 on Nine.

  1. @kats – Nine acting in a callous way to a show on another network and spreading unfounded rumours about the said show?

    Nahhhh, surely they wouldn’t? 😉

I am disappointed that Lisa would say something like that though, I thought more of her than that. That kind of comment deserves to reside more on ACA than Today.

  2. @Nessa,there could be any number of reasons that someone already had started filming. It could be that they had recognised the girls from The Shire sitting at the cafe and decided to film them,it could be that the alleged assailants did actually set this up,not The Shire girls. In any case,in this day and age most people seem to always have a camera phone at the ready waiting for something to happen.Alot of footage we view seems to be acquired in this way. It’s the world we live in.

  3. I cannot believe this was a stunt. If it was just a fight i could believe but not when knives are produced. Ten are not that stupid. Why do the media call it a scrag or cat fight when it comes to women. I find it a bit demeaning to all women.

  4. I saw some footage aired on Sunrise this morning…someone just happeend to be taping the girls before anything actually happened???

Smells like a stunt to me.

  5. This morning on the Today show, during Girls on the Grill segment they discussed the issue of this fight.Lisa Wilkinson made some comments, saying she can’t help but be cynical and that this possibly may have been a publicity stunt.I think her comments were wrong.Until people have the facts, violence should not be trivialised. It may well have been set up,but by the attackers setting upon Sophie and Vernesa. We have seen it plenty of times before, where people try and get a fight going, just to capture it on a phone and then put it out there for the world to see.By no means is this the fault of the victim.

  6. @Gregaus,absolutely agree.
We should always care if someone has been hurt or felt threatened in any way,it shouldn’t matter who it is.
And David you are right.Unfortunately not caring doesn’t make for a breach of comments policy.

  7. David, I’ve noticed that on some of the more controversial stories you tend to close comments due to their content. I think you’re spot on with your policy with comments, although maybe this story should’ve also been closed off too. The Shire has received a lot of hate recently, and it’s no surprise some less-empathetic members of the site have resorted to posting spiteful comments.

  8. I love these 2 girls and hope Vernessaa is OK. At least they are honest about what they stand for. If they ever chose to star in adult entertainment movies, they would be megastars with their assets.

Live your life the way you want to girls, unlike many others you are harmless lovely people

  9. So will they do a Lara Bingle and have them watching the episode of ACA featuring the catfight in a future episode [god forbid if there are any future episodes] ?

  10. The comments on this site always sadden me. It’s very often populated with horrible and spiteful haters who try to attack anything and everything.

But to see the first to comments after someone has been attacked include

“should we really care…” and “publicity stunt anybody” is really shocking.

Hoin and GC shame on you… why is the Australian TV industry filled with this hate?

  11. Is the shire on tonight?

( I don’t watch TEN, after their stunt with F1. I use other means, but take delight in their unending failures, so I have no idea 🙂

Say what ever you want about the people, the programming wtc, but you just hate to see people get hurt…

  12. Guys ease up on the hate. I know it’s easier to slam than to care, but until we know more details, jumping to “publicity stunt” conclusions when someone could’ve been stabbed (regardless of what you think of them) is really shameful.

    1. To clarify: I would draw the line at approving Comments which endorse or celebrate the use of violence, and am even tougher when the situation involves minors. But while I may not agree with some here, a reader saying “I don’t care” or questioning an act as a publicity stunt, is not of itself a breach of Comments Policy. Negative anonymous comments are not exclusive to this site, and I always encourage everyone to contribute thoughtful comments they would happily exchange face to face in public. Thanks.
