US Syfy channel is set to remake UK series Blake’s 7.

In a statement, the network said: “Syfy will develop the cult UK classic adventure-sci-fi series Blake’s 7, teaming with Georgeville Television and producer Marc Rosen.”

The series ran from 1978-1981 in the UK, featuring the adventures of Roj Blake, a political dissident who escaped from an intergalactic prison, stole an abandoned space ship and lead a posse of ragamuffins on a mission across the galaxy.

Casino Royale director Martin Campbell will oversee a pilot based on script by writer Joe Pokaski, with hopes for a full 13-episode series.

  1. There is just no way they can make the delicious ambiguity of Avon (Paul Darrow)IMHO, hoping against history that this does work.

And as much as I’d love this to work, the US remakes have never been good at what makes shows like this great See failure of Life On Mars & Being Human as best recent examples.

  2. I cringed too. @Mac…I think Battlestar a different ballgame actually. Blake’s 7 – like anything that has become cult-like in aura – depends on the whole package that ‘was’; the look, the camera work etc. I find most remakes just disservice what ‘was’.

I also deplored the Avengers remake of 1998. The original series was wonderful yet that 98 version was weak as water by comparison. I’m afraid HW tend to think BIG action scenes maketh everything. They don’t. And nor did the original series have love interests per se. There was a frisson between Steed and Peel..and that was more than enough.

  3. From the man who created the daleks (Terry Nation not Davros).

@mr darcy – I would tend to agree with you but Morena Baccarin did a fine job as the alien queen in “V” and you could pretty much slot that character in as is.

That pic is from S3 or 4, when Avon was leader after Blake had disappeared.

  4. A remake sounds tempting, but by the US and SyFy? I really cannot see this happening, SyFy are no longer into Sci-Fi. They have no real SyFy content anymore, just WWF & ghost hunters. Their last real foray into sci-fi was the latest Battlestar Galactica spinoff – Blood & Chrome, and that never eventuated.

  5. Yes indeed, Mr Darcy, no-one could ever come close to her performance. I can’t even watch her on DVD extras being interviewed because she is such a nice person and so un-Servalan. Who can fill Brian Blessed’s sneakers??

  6. I don’t know whether to be horrified, or happy. Big Blake’s 7 fan. I bought my very first BASF 3 hour video tape for $21-95 (my studentship was $32 a week) so my parents could tape it for me while I was off doing my country teaching prac. I still have that tape!!!
I will be watching with trepidation, hoping for a good remake, but really, who could be Avon??? Any casting suggestions??? The Governator could be Gan!!!

  7. I’m not sure what to make of this? I mean…how can anyone fill the shoes of Jacqueline Pearce’ Servalan – Supreme Commander of the Terran Federation. I ask you!
