Movies poised for On Demand release same day as DVD

Get ready for Hollywood movies being available in Video on Demand the same day as their DVD release.

The gap between Hollywood movies having a cinema release and a Pay TV screening is shrinking, with news that most movies will be available for a Video on Demand screening the same day as their DVD release.

The gap between DVD and VOD releases was originally 90 days, but was shortened to 60 days, then 45 and 30. Deadline reports it will now be 0 except for independent distributors like Anchor Bay and Eagle Entertainment. The first to enjoy a same-day release was The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button in 2010.

From September nearly every Hollywood film will be available simultaneously on VOD and DVD, including new releases The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Men In Black 3 and The Five-Year Engagement.

U.S. distributors have been looking to boost VOD revenues to help compensate for the contracting DVD business.

Brendon Moo, general manager of Foxtel On Demand and Pay Per View, says subscribers per capita buy four times as many movies as those who subscribe to Britain’s BSkyB.

  1. I have Foxtel but never used VOD and can’t remember the last time I rented a DVD.

The days of the DVD rental shop in there current form are numbered with VOD and online options.

The only DVDs I now buy are some TV shows and mainly for the extras.

  2. Hey Jezza – they’re going that way already.

We’ve seen the smaller stores crumble, and, a few months ago, a large Video Ezy store in Charlestown (Newcastle NSW) shut up shop and threw away the keys.

I still enjoy going to our local Blockbuster and picking up new release DVDs for $1.95 on cheapie Tuesdays.

    Beats bloody Murdoch.

  3. The world is very small thanks to this new technology so really we need worldwide release dates so movies dont leak on the internet several months before Australia release

It will still happen, just not so much.

Music is getting there, Movies still have a long way to go

  4. Dont Foxtel already do this? every time i see an ad for a movie on Foxtel on demand it says same day as DVD. like The Hunger Games and the Avengers were on demand same day as DVD

  5. I’d be in a minority. I buy DVD’s because I want to watch certain series quite often – which I do. I rarely buy actual movies. And I want portability between devices. So, why as a diehard video purchaser would I not readily go to VOD? In part because I am increasingly wary of cloud dependence for the info you buy or have. Then again, you can’t wrap or crack a VOD movie as you can a DVD.

This said, I guess as long as your say $15 VOD purchase is an ever lasting repeatable experience until you drop off the mortal coil, then it is a lot cheaper. Do people simply make a copy if they want to use that movie in another device??

It won’t put movie rental places out of business in certain lower socio-economic suburb areas.
