TEN denies Recipe to Riches rumours

TEN is adamant that an upcoming Reality series has not hit pre-production strife.

Network TEN is denying media speculation that upcoming Reality series Recipe to Riches has hit pre-production strife.

The Herald Sun reports staff have been put on hold amid concerns the cooking show hasn’t attracted enough potential applicants.

The FremantleMedia series sees home-chefs launching their own creation onto supermarket shelves and pocketing $200,000 along the way.

Earlier this week TEN sources denied the Canadian-format (pictured) had been cancelled to TV Tonight, but it remains unclear if the series has moved from an expected February launch.

Yesterday a spokesperson firmly told TV Tonight, “The speculation about Recipe to Riches is completely wrong. The production schedule has not been confirmed – which, as you know, is not unusual at this stage in a new show’s development – so the chatter that production has been ‘delayed’ by six weeks is absolute nonsense.

“We are very happy with the number of people who want to appear on Recipe to Riches and auditions have started. Where we are at in terms of hiring a host and signing sponsors is confidential. Recipe to Riches will be part of TEN’s 2013 line-up and we are looking forward to bringing this compelling, innovative new series to Australian viewers.”

A FremantleMedia spokesperson also denied the speculation:  “We have discovered raw talent with incredible stories during our auditions. We could not be happier with our storytelling. Our production team is in place and we’re all set to make this ground-breaking program for TEN.”

Applications closed on August 24 but the official applicants website is still active.

  1. After Ben Elton, Excess Baggage, Everybody Dance Now and I Will Survive, Fremantle can’t afford to get this one wrong.

I’ve seen the Canadian version and think it’ll work here but not have mass appeal like MC.

  2. This is only a small variation on an overdone formula. Networks always feel the need to clone successful shows.

The Renovators was a clone of Masterchef, only with renovation instead of cooking. Excess Baggage was The Biggest Loser-lite with a terrible host and celebrities instead of members of the public.

Celebrity Masterchef, Juniour Masterchef, Masterchef All Stars, My Kitchen Rules, My Restaurant Rules, Ready Steady Cook, Iron Chef Australia…and now we have this show “Recipe to Riches”. Where will it end?

  3. Sounds very similar to Cooks to Market that started in the UK last night on Sky. The series gives “amateur cooks the chance to turn their homemade food products into a life-changing business.”

I wonder if there was a potential copyright problem. The UK show is produced by Splash Media.

  4. @tomothyd…Interesting comment because I know just how much broadcasters push for this info – and will request it in concepts they are considering if it’s not been included.

I think what people who push for this fail to understand is how often we (audience) winds up hearing it across various shows.

It’s like that awful, awkward moment when someone longing to get onto a singing show has to say “I live for singing…I would die if I didn’t sing” (with tears in eyes). We all know those moments where the judges push prospective contestants to come out with this.

How many time do we hear it before it starts to feel false. It’s refreshing now to hear someone simply say: “I love to sing but I would like to make money and build a career”. What is honestly so wrong with that?!

  5. @JB quality drama often costs more, doesn’t fill up their schedule and therefore more a risky venture. I think if anything we’ll be seeing less quality as they cut back and prop up their schedule with cheaper imports. Be thankful they have content quotas!

  6. Right on Kenny.. Save our Australian Media jobs! I was enraged when someone sent me this link… Since when did we have a shortage of production people in Australia?

  7. @ALBY – The LAHFA (I think you mean LAFHA) is a rort and needs to be closed. If Poms want to come here and take our jobs then do it on an even footing. When I moved from Brisbane to Sydney to take a job I didn’t get any tax-free LAFHA or even any reimbursement for moving costs.
This sounds like yet another loss-maker for reality-obsessed TEN. “this compelling, innovative new series” Riiiight!!!
“launching their own creation onto supermarket shelves”. Only if they pay Colesworths for shelf space rent, sell their product at the price set by Colesworths, and expect to see a “home brand” version at half-price next week.

  8. Although I don’t really watch reality tv, I was actually looking forward to this show, especially after Oprah plucked two women from obscurity for their chicken pie, and then did a deal with a major pie company for them, and now the two women are going gangbusters. I actually hope this show comes off, I will tune in.

  9. “We have discovered raw talent with incredible stories”
Here lies the problem I have with reality shows. In this show I want to see a contestant with skill, passion and for the fact that they are trying to market a quality product and have have taken the right approach to win the competition.

I do not want to know their back story nor do I think a person should be included in the show just because their past makes for a good ‘story’. That not why I am watching, I am watching a competition based on skill, not hoping the single mother with 5 kids who recovered from cancer beats the orphan child who got bumped from foster home to foster home. If you have to have an emotional back story to be in a competition, that already then already limits your changes of entering and limits the chances of me actually wanting to watch.

  10. Perhaps production has been delayed by the LAHFA… Seems like foreign owned production companies can no longer import their workers from the UK and get tax concessions, while Aussie crews are unemployed for being ‘too expensive’ See the poms comment on Mumbrella … Charming

  11. Sounds like another turkey. Save yourself the trouble Ten. Enough reality crap that have all bombed and killed your network. Start focusing on producing more quality drama.
