Now this could be fun.

This doco looks at an IBM computer that was used in an episode of US game show Jeopardy against seasoned champions. At stake was a prize of $1M.

‘Watson’ is an IBM developed super-computer gearing up to compete against the most successful contestants of all time on the popular game show Jeopardy!. Who will prevail in this ultimate showdown between man and machine will be decided with a grand prize of one million dollars.

Smartest Machine on Earth chronicles the unprecedented, behind-the-scenes access to IBM researchers as they develop the technology for Watson, and the challenges they face in mimicking the human thought process, as well as the potential applications for the future.

Watson’s incredible ability to reason and tackle human language is unlike any computer capacity before it. Refined and fine-tuned over four years and countless man-hours, Watson has already managed to rival some of the best former Jeopardy! contestants.

But now it’s time to take the stage and see what Watson is really made of. Win or lose, the difficulty of mimicking the human thought process with software is showing artificial-intelligence researchers that there’s more than one way to be ‘intelligent’.

  1. Count me in. I enjoy the odd show of Jeopardy even though some of the categories are incredibly obscure.

I really hope a person wins, not the machine. And I’m relieved they named the machine Wilson instead of Hal. 🙂
