Axed: Australia’s Got Talent

Seven has axed plans for Australia's Got Talent for 2013.

Seven has axed plans for Australia’s Got Talent for 2013.

The move comes just two weeks after the show was announced as part of Seven’s line-up for next year.

Seven is citing costs and disappointing ratings as the key reasons behind the axe.

The series had six seasons with Seven with host Grant Denyer and Dannii Minogue. Other judges have included Kyle Sandilands, Brian McFadden, Red Symons and Tom Burlinson.

Last year its rating went through the roof, surging past the 2m mark. But this year against The Voice the show struggled to resonate, despite having talented acts.

A Seven spokesperson told TV Tonight a budget had been put aside for a 2013 series but rising costs meant the show was no longer practical and those funds would be divested into other development.

Seven is also understood to be very keen on another new format.

Update: Nine has since signed AGT for 2013.

  1. Dannii will go to X factor AU. Mel b will go to X factor UK. Guy will leave as he is having success overseas Dannii will replace Guy and they will find a Mr nasty judge to replace Mel b. I think 7 have overreated. Every now and then a show like The Voice and masterchef comes along and will wipe any other show out. It needed a revamp and new timeslot. A rest is ok but hopefully it comes back.

  2. The money saved won’t go to their drama slate. Home and Away, Packed To The Rafters, Winners and Losers and newbie A Place To Call Home are already in production. Seven is also co-producing a new drama with ITV, Rebecca Gibney is creating a new drama with her partner once Rafters wraps up and Bevan Lee is working on a Winners and Losers spin-off.

I don’t see The Price Is Right returning for 2013, its treatment in Melbourne speaks volumes. Deal Or No Deal’s numbers are haemorrhaging. With the exception of Sunday Night, Seven News and Current Affairs brands are losing in its two key markets, affecting total numbers and their number one nationwide status.

I hope Seven eyes more new formats. I’m a hardcore Seven viewer but I believe they’re going to struggle in 2013 to the point they’ll end up number 2. This isn’t right.

  3. Another Fremantle axing makes me wonder how much financial pressure these Australian outposts of the big international companies are under. When Australian networks tighten their expenditure it must effect the bottom lines of Endemol, Fremantle, Granada and Shine.

  4. Dannii Minogue is contracted with Seven right through to the end of 2013 and will be paid even if she doesn’t work on anything.

I adored this show but I believe it’s a tiring format that needs to be rested. Seven pay a lot of money just to acquire the licensing rights and it wouldn’t make sense for them to make it if they aren’t getting a return from it.

I believe Ten is more likely to bring back Australian Idol than produce their own Australia’s Got Talent, seeing they unsuccessfully bid for The Voice: Australia.

  5. Terrible news I always enjoyed Australia’s Got Talent and watched every episode The Producers would be better off taking the show to Foxtel it would have a better chance of being a hit rather than TEN

  6. It’s terrible news I always found the show to be great and much better than The Voice and I thought it was stupid the 2 shows were against each other in the first place

  7. Hurrah, once less diabolical talent reality show on TV . Please note I am all for the promotion of new talent but not through these manipulative, unrealistic and contrived talent shows.

  8. Another example of the fickle tv industry. Remember last year, drunk on AGTs high ratings they replaced the last eps of Packed to the Rafters with a couple of put together AGT specials. Oh well, I was one of those that watched last year, but didn’t this year. Too many talent shows on. I think it does need a rest of a couple of years, then come back BB style.

  9. It’s a great show, I think they should have just changed the format slightly and not allow singers, telling them to audition for the X-factor. making Aus got talent and real talent show.

  10. If you ask me its the wrong decision. I do expect TEN to pounce on this show as Fremantle Media looks like it will shop the format around. All it needed was a judge revamp getting rid of boofhead 1 and 2 and it could have worked. I feel Dannii is now headed to X Factor AU.

Now with this i hope The Amazing Race Australia has better hopes. I would hate to lose this show but Seven are being very coy about it.
