Axed: Private Practice

US medical drama Private Practice will end with the 13th episode of Season Six.

US medical drama Private Practice will end with the 13th episode of Season Six, currently airing in America.

ABC (US) has opted not to give the series a ‘back 9 pickup’ of further episodes.

Kate Walsh, who plays Addison Montgomery, was due to exit at S6E13, which will now serve as the series finale.

Creator Shonda Rhimes made the following statement to fans:

I’m sad to say that Private Practice’s run will end after episode 613 this season. There was a lot of discussion and debate but, in the end, the guys at the network and the studio and I all decided that Private Practice was reaching its finish line. Creatively, we are all extremely proud of the show and especially proud of this season — which you will all soon discover is a creative renaissance. I can’t wait for you to see it.

It’s heartbreaking to end. Truly. I feel so lucky to write for these characters and tell these stories and I truly feel this show has taught me so much as a writer. And there’s a family here, of crew and cast, people who have bonded over these past five and a half seasons. It’s rare for a show to go for more than 100 episodes and we are incredibly proud to have been such a show. And we’re grateful to all of you for spending time with us for an hour every week for the last 6 years. It’s meant the world. Thank you.

Seven is yet to premiere S6 in Australia.

Meanwhile, ABC has given additional episode orders to Grey’s Anatomy (two episodes for a 24-episode order), as well as Modern Family and The Middle (two episodes each) and Castle (one episode).

  1. I thought this would happen but saying it got worse since the rape storyline seem strange I think the show really improved massively since then and I will sure miss Charlotte being on my screen!

  2. im not surprised this show was good the first 2 seasons but to be honest the rape episode changed the show forever it jumped the shark for the worse it just wasnt what anybody was expecting or wanted from this type of spin off show it was meant to be quirky

  3. I love this show but I couldn’t see it lasting much longer based on the storylines over the last couple of seasons. I was hoping it would happen after Tim Daley was let go at the end of the season and Kate Walsh only signed on for half a season.
The worst thing about it being axed is no more Private Practice/Greys Anatomy crossovers, as well as Taye Diggs no longer being on TV (who I have adored since his role in Kevin Hill that aired on W many years ago)!
