Chris Martin rumoured for The Voice

Reports emerge today that Coldplay's Chris Martin is the likely name to replace Keith Urban on The Voice.

The Daily Telegraph today reports that Coldplay’s Chris Martin is the likely name to replace Keith Urban on The Voice.

Martin, who was reportedly offered a spot on The Voice UK’s coaching panel last year but declined, is close to signing for the gig and would return to Australia next year for live tapings.

“The schedules check out and (Martin) ticks all (Shine’s) boxes,” a music insider said. “He has a huge international profile and the publicity would do no harm to Coldplay’s album sales in Australia.

“Plus, he is married to Gwyneth Paltrow.”

True enough, although we never saw much from Nicoles Kidman and Ritchie on the show this year.

Martin’s presence would up the international contingent on the show, but sources have previously told TV Tonight that there is no pre-requisite that an Australian ultimately replaces Urban.

Nine told the newspaper an announcement regarding Urban’s replacement would be made “soon.”

A Shine spokeswoman said: “Nothing to say on that.”

  1. Gotye, Missy Higgins, Ricki-Lee, Sarah Blasko, Angus and/or Julia Stone, Daniel Johns, Darren Hayes, Megan Washington, Kylie (doubtful though), Danni Minogue since AGT is now done, 360, Vanessa Amorosi…. just to name a few Aussie artists in the industry today who know their shit and would be just as fine an addition to the show as any international big name artist.

The UK version has will.i.am as their big namer, the others are born & bred. (Fun fact: only just found out Tom Jones is Welsh)

I think for The Voice to really be about the music, the talent and… ya know, the voices… maybe not go for the big judge attraction.
The X Factor in my opinion is only holding their shit together because of Mel B. They lucked out. She is the best judge on that show & any other… and a Spice Girl.

I just hope Nine don’t make something as amazing as an opportunity like this & mess it up purely for ratings and attention (aka pulling a Seven)….

  2. At first I thought “here we go again – another international act to judge Aussie singers’ and then I read the other comments.

And seriously, does Nine have enough money to lure a big name multi-millionaire act? The Voice probably costs double what X Factor and AGT combined.

I am betting they will get someone a lot cheaper.

  3. This is just fantasy…you may as well put Lady Gaga and Beyonce on the list. Coldplay is possibly the biggest band in the world…they’d be lucky to get the guy from Creed.

  4. Still not sure why Australian music artists are not considered worthy for all 4 panel chairs, or at least the majority!
Don’t we have any high profile or talented options? Us of they are being paid reward the Australian economy whee they could spend money in our country!?! Just a thought!

  5. I am shocked at Sarah H.

”can’t think of many current high profile Aussie muscians”…umm Kylie Minogue, Olive Newton-John, Gotye…wow! I thought of some.

Put someone like that in the mix. Who says it has to be 3 boys and 1 girl as the judges.

Put another australian judge instead of making it all international. That was ‘Everyboyd dance now”s problem. Too many international judges/coaches and ruined the show.

Come on!! We have many high profile aussie acts to fill the judging position.

  6. as much as i love coldplay n chris martin, nah not a good idea…they should get john farnham..plz get rid of ditzy blonde delta, and get marcia hines or some other good singer who isnt constantly following the boys

  7. Although I do like Coldplay, and it would be good if Chris Martin gets the gig, I would like to see an Australian artist on the panel… because there is currently only Delta, who was the only Australian born judge on the panel for this year (Keith was born in NZ).

  8. If I was casting I would go with Robbie Williams, not so much for his singing but more for his personality. I like Chris Martin but I think Robbie Williams would be more entertaining.

  9. I can’t see it happening. Chris Martin rarely does anything outside of touring. I know he was interviewed on Ellen, but I think I remember it being mentioned its very rare for him to do that.

  10. I would consider watching The Voice next year if Chris Martin is a judge.

They put the lead singer from “The Script” on the Voice UK and he was the best thing about that show. Better yet, they should axe Delta and find someone who isn’t annoyingly fake.

  11. Who cares who he’s married to.. (in regards to the statement, not the article)

Wonder if any Aussies are being tossed about the hat, cant think of many current high profile Aussie musicians though..
