Gruen tops the magic million

Ratings: Wednesday was a low rating night but Gruen Planet proved the ABC can still pull numbers over the magic million.

Wednesday proved to be a low rating night with news bulletins on Seven, ABC and Nine leading the evening.

But ABC’s Gruen Planet managed to win its timeslot, restoring some faith to the broadcaster’s Wednesday schedule and showing it can pull numbers over the magic million. It scored 1.02m viewers. Maybe TEN will want Russel Howcroft on air next year after all?

Seven Network won with a 31.0% share then Nine 27.2%, ABC 19.3%, TEN 17.0% and SBS 5.5%.

Seven News was 1.07m for Seven then Today Tonight (1.00m), Surveillance Oz (1.00m), Highway Patrol (966,000), Criminal Minds (855,000 / 660,000), Home and Away (843,000), Deal or No Deal (488,000) and Covert Affairs (274,000).

Nine News was 1.06m for Nine then Big Brother (1.05m), A Current Affair (955,000), Big Fat Gypsy Weddings (660,000), Embarrassing Bodies (601,000), Hot Seat (566,000) and Embarrassing Kids Bodies (303,000).

ABC News won its timeslot on 1.06m for ABC1 then Gruen Planet (1.02m), The Hamster Wheel (791,000), 7:30 (789,000), Qi (772,000), Randling (425,000) and At the Movies (318,000).

Puberty Blues wrapped with 707,000 for TEN. TEN News was 628,000, Modern Family was 496,000, The Project 6pm was 386,000, Last Man Standing was 364,000 / 347,000 and Class of was just 181,000.

On SBS ONE Living with the Amish was 265,000, Survivors: Indestructible Creatures was 250,000 and World News Australia was 161,000.

Heartbeat led multichannels with 333,000.

  1. @chrisjrn: I really hope that’s not true, Gruen is one of the smartest and funniest shows on TV! There were similar rumors before this season, but this time there’s the added factor of Russell moving to Ten. I mean, David’s said previously that there is precedence for a person to be on the two networks but it’s possible that he wants out anyway.

  4. Is 7.30’s rating better than usual? Perhaps due to the massive publicity after the John Laws interview. Fun stuff like that needs to happen more often.

  5. I don’t have a funny bone in my body, but found last night’s Gruen an absolute hoot… perhaps because much of it is unscripted? With that in mind, I tested my new found comedic fondness on the chaser team. After watching the opening credits (a youtube clip of a hamster setting lap records) I went and performed root canal surgery on myself… much more entertaining.

  7. I enjoyed class of at the beginning but lately it feels like I’m watching the same thing over and over

    Also a fairly anti climatic finale for puberty blues but still a fantastic Australian drama

  8. I have been loving Last Man Standing and I’m really pleased Ten have decided to continue showing it. It may fare better on 11 (such as The Middle on GO!) but I’m just happy to have Tim Allen back on the air… I watch it with my dad who totally relates as he has 2 daughters and no sons…

  9. I came across Embarrassing Kids Bodies whilst channel hopping last night, I realise that it has a lead-in from Embarrassing Bodies but it does seem odd that what is essentially a kids show is being broadcast so late at night.

  10. covering Alan Jones is what pushed up ABC’s ratings and, specifically, the numbers for Gruen Planet and Hamster Wheel (which both used at least half of the air-time talking about Jones)

  12. The sooner Randling finishes the better. They could be screening Lowdown; or Alan Carr; or Jonathon Ross; or just about anything else. Hell, even put At The Movies on earlier.
