Jennifer Byrne Presents: The Harry Games

Jennifer Byrne looks at the rise of young adult fiction, from Harry Potter to Twilight and The Hunger Games.

This week on Jennifer Byrne Presents the episode is called “The Harry Games: (no, not Prince Harry’s games) and looks at the rise of young adult fiction, from Harry Potter to Twilight and The Hunger Games.

Hang on, aren’t they all movies?

Anyone who has walked into a bookstore in recent years will know that teen titles dominate the front of the shop. Gone are the days of fairy tales and Boy’s Own adventures. The youth fiction of today is increasingly dark, tackling taboos and offering nightmarish visions of the future.

What has brought about this progression? How has this once niche area of the publishing market become an industry colossus? Why is the domain of young adults now one for grown-ups too?

To tackle these questions, Jennifer Byrne is joined by legendary YA authors John Marsden, Melina Marchetta and Morris Gleitzman, along with up and coming YA author Steph Bowe (who wrote her first book when she was just 15).

This fascinating discussion into the fastest growing section of the book market is a ‘must see’.

  1. Interesting that they want John Marsden to comment on ‘dark’ youth adult fiction. John Marsden writes some incredibly dark, realistic stories on war, youth suicide and depression. He’s been doing it for years now.

This will be an interesting discussion.
