Renewed: Boardwalk Empire

HBO Prohibition drama Boardwalk Empire has been renewed for a fourth season.

Not to be confused with Birdwalk Empire, HBO Prohibition drama Boardwalk Empire has been renewed for a fourth season.

The first episode of the third season has already gathered 7.2 million viewers including PVR (or DVR as the Yanks call it) and online.

“Terry Winter, Martin Scorsese and the rest of their outstanding team continue to produce a stunning show that never fails to surprise and entertain,” said Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming.

In Australia Showcase is currently fast-tracking the third season.

The series was created by Winter, who executive produces with Scorsese, Mark Wahlberg, Stephen Levinson, Tim Van Patten and Howard Korder.

  1. For cable shows there is the ratings figure for the first screening, on the first day and all viewing on including on DVRs within 7 days.

The 3.5m for Mad Men was just for the first screening of the the first episode of S5. The equivalent for BE would have been less than 3m

HBO is in about 28m US households, Showtime 20m not sure about AMC.

Showcase has exclusive first run rights to Boardwalk Empire. SBS has picked up non-exclusive repeat rights after Showcase has repeated the series and the DVD has been released. They can’t afford to show BE any sooner.

  2. Think Mad Men’s biggest audience has been 3.5 mill…wonder if that’s partly a function of HBO being in more homes than AMC.Was wondering..would Sbs pay considerably less per episode, being 3 seasons behind, than Movie Extra…the pay tv being more current?

  3. I didn’t think there was much doubt Boardwalk would be renewed. It’s an excellent show. They still need to get the episodes to FTA a lot sooner though. And DVR rolls off the tongue (and makes more sense) better than PVR.
