Underground to screen at BFI London Film Festival

Sunday night’s movie on TEN, Underground: The Julian Assange Story, has been selected to screen at the the 56th BFI London Film Festival next week.

It will join other Aussie films being screened, The Sapphires and Wish You Were Here.

This follows a screening at the Toronto International Film Festival last month.

Meanwhile, Wikileaks yesterday tweeted, “This is false. Neither Assange nor WikiLeaks have ‘approved’ of the movie ‘Underground‘, though we like aspects.”

The film is based on a book by Suelette Dreyfus and the film indicates it is “based on events.”

Writing in the Herald Sun, Christine Assange says of Underground:

Newcomer Alex Williams was so convincing at times I actually felt I was looking at my son. It was also great to see aspects of Julian’s personality brought out that aren’t normally seen by the public, such as his cheeky sense of humour and the warmth and sensitivity he showed as a young father.

But I did cringe at times while viewing the portrayal of my own character. Thats not because of Rachael Griffiths’ acting which actually saved the day, but because of the script and dialogue which perpetuates the media myth that I was an anti-American, left-leaning activist. I was never that.
