Axed: Emily Owens MD

US medical drama Emily Owens MD will end production at its 13-episodes.

US medical drama Emily Owens MD will end production at its 13-episodes next week after The CW opted not to give it a full-season order.

The series, starring Mamie Gummer, has been over-shadowed by the network’s other new series, Arrow and Beauty and the Beast. The latter starring Jay Ryan has benefitted from ts Vampire Diaries lead-in, but Emily Owens followed the lower-ranking Hart of Dixie.

The CW plans to air all Emily Owens episodes and by the looks of things TEN was strategic to air the series sooner rather than later. As Nine demonstrated with Charlie’s Angels last year, sometimes it’s smarter to fast-track a series if it looks like being a dud, rather than trying to talk it up in February.

  1. Emily Owens MD is rating less than 200k with The Good Wife as a lead in. It won’t rate much on 11 and they will have already got a summer line up in place.

If Channel 10 are obligated to pay for all 13 eps then they will probably put it on in a hole somewhere over summer. If they don’t have to pay for the unscreened eps there is no point in doing so.

I imagine that Channel 10 will only fasttrack new shows that don’t look to have much potential, like Emily Owens. And good show new show they will have to try to give a better start.

Ten will show the new eps of their established shows in February. They will start few weeks behind but will be caught up by the end of the US season in May due to the Easter break and production breaks in the US.

And will probably have no choice but to put new episodes on in September. It would be smart to sit on them for a few weeks so they can cover gaps in the US schedule though.

  2. @Maev….Sydney – Hey, that’s my problem too!
We are the unwanted demography, apparently.
Maybe TV production companies should pay us not to like their shows and thus avoid our kiss of death!

  3. @ Craig, Emily Owens and The Good Wife are out of the schedule as of next week. They are replaced with movies. I don’t understand why Ten don’t just move Emily Owens to Eleven to air over summer.

  4. This is a shame as I really enjoyed it. It offered some differentiation from the other hit medical series such as Grey’s Anatomy and House. Hopefully this doesn’t deter TEN from fast-tracking.

  5. That’s a shame.
I actually saw a full episode last week
and I really thought it had improved a lot.
I was looking forward to more.
Another one for the dvd list!
