Reality TV’s music hits

Which Reality TV music acts have been the most successful, and who is on the comeback trail?

Altiyan Childs, fallen from grace winner of The X Factor 2010 has signed to independent label Oxygen Music Group and will release a new single, Headlines, in December and a new album Born Before The Sun, in early 2013.

“This album is 24 years in the making as far as I am concerned,” Childs has said in the statement.

“I would almost say this is my debut album as this is my first, real, honest album. The one I have always wanted to make, not an album I have been forced to make.”

I don’t really count his chances of rating a mention on The X Factor finale as very strong.

Meanwhile the Herald Sun today ranks album sales for some of Reality TV’s music graduates for the past decade or so:

Others to rate a mention as successes, if not necessarily in album sales, are The Voice‘s Karise Eden, Darren Percival, Rachel Leahcar and Sarah De Bono, Idol‘s Rob Mills and X Factor‘s Johnny Ruffo.

I would throw Dean Geyer’s name in the mix too, now with his star on the rise in the US on Glee. Axel Whitehead and Dan O’Connor have also had some acting success.

Casey Donovan also sings at NITV’s launch next month.

Before that you have to go back to nostalgic talent shows such as Young Talent Time, New Faces etc.

A number of names I haven’t heard of for a while are Mark Vincent, Liam Burrows, Wes Carr, Paulini Curuenavuli, Hayley Warner, Carl Riseley, Natalie Gauci, Bobby Flynn, Lee Harding, Kate DeAraugo….

  1. Yeah you forgot Bardot David!!! But Popstars was a different beast to todays talent shows. Album sales and such are irrelevant. And talent shows dont care who wins after the announcement because the ratings are done and dusted. Then its up to the induvidual to work their arse off to make the most of their 15 minutes of fame. Some want more and some are happy to tell the grandkids that they won a talent show once. There is great money to be made singing at weddings and corporate gigs. As long as your doing what you love, who cares about contracts and sales. Good on all who try cause it aint easy.

  2. Cosima di Veto has just released a new single, forget what its called as only heard it once when she sang on Couch time and Sunrise I think. You can google it on her website. She is the one that should have one Idol instead of Guy but she had to pull out.

  3. Heather , its the shows i dislike not the people on them. However i do wonder how long the performers on these shows would last on the pub circuit. not that long id suggest

  4. Actually GreyGhost, you are wrong. I am at least your age. And yes the 1970s was a great era for music. But at that time the industry in Australia had good consistent support from Countdown, record companies, talent scouts, etc. Now young people have to go on shows like The Voice just to gain some exposure.
Absolutely nothing wrong with that. And I am referring to your criticism of these people just because they have appeared on these shows – for no other reason.
Just like any other musician, some will succeed in forging a long-term career and some will not.

Give them a break, I say.
