Seven hiring News staff

Seven is hiring staff around the country -could a successor to Today Tonight be in sight?

While some networks are ditching News staff left, right and centre, Seven News has taken the reverse approach and is now actively recruiting Reporters, Producers and Researchers.

Seven yesterday ran employment ads on SEEK located in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.

“Seven is looking for Reporters, Producers & Researchers for our News and Public Affairs programs, located nationwide,” it noted.

“This is an exciting opportunity and the bar is set high.

“We are looking for creative self-starters, who can generate story ideas and manage the content and production of stories.”

The ads come on the same day that Peter Meakin announced he was stepping down as head of News and Current Affairs, with Rob Raschke and Neil Mooney to split the position into two.

Meanwhile there’s no clarity on where this leaves former Today Tonight exec producer Craig McPherson, but with rumours he set up office at Seven last week and new employment ads on the market, could he be taking charge of a new current affairs show for Seven?

Last week Peter Meakin told The Age, “I think the 6.30 programs have to evolve. We can’t keep serving up the same meal year after year. We have to be more inventive, more adventurous maybe, and I think you’ll see that on Seven and Nine.”

  1. Its looking to me that Today Tonight may disappear. Maybe a serious news and Current affairs hour betwwen 6 pm and 7pm. They may lose viewers at 6.30 but could make gains at 6pm if they get some news cred back. Today Tonight may still rate ok but does nothing to enhance their news credibility and with the ABC news doing so well, there may be a shift in viewer habits emerging.

  2. It’s like they change the name over the years many a time.In the Eighties It was State Affair,Later On We Had Real Life and Now Today Tonight.I wonder if this means going back to the old formula of what these kinds of shows were like back in the day.
