Seven News grins through technical hiccups

Plans by Seven News to host a live bulletin from Flemington were plagued by technical hiccups on Saturday.

For all the technicians and camera crews Seven has invested in the Spring Racing Carnival you would think plans for Seven News Melbourne live from Flemington would have run smoothly last night.

But there were all sorts of audio problems wreaking havoc.

News updates to Jennifer Keyte in the afternoon had poor audio levels.

The 6pm bulletin started with Dean Felton in the studio at Docklands but even one story had no audio at all. Halfway through the bulletin Jennifer Keyte took over as presenter from Flemington racetrack.

There must have been further problems with the location, because sports presenter Tim Watson was sitting so close to Keyte in a single camera shot that it looked like they were about to get whiplash just to try and make eye contact. Very awkward.

Fingers crossed they sort out the problems before the big day this week.

  1. I think the appeal of live TV for the punters watching at home, is when something goes wrong. It’s always fun to watch how they get out of the mess and recover.

  2. Why do the News from a racetrack anyway? Its like doing the weather on the weekend morning shows from all sorts of gimmicky locations, just tell me the news and weather!

  3. Something is wrong with 7 News at the moment. Just so cheap and nasty. Sticking Peter Mitchell in front of the burnley tunnel for a whole bulletin is another case in point. Why oh why do that to your news anchor? Peter should never leave the studio – you lose that sense of control and authority when your reader is squinting, ad libbing and trying his best to look interested – against the odds!

  4. I thought it was something to do with the train crash, might have looked innaproriate reporting a serious accident with a fatality surrounded by fascinators.

but trainwreck it definitely was, that war veteran story where they lost audio that kept going was the low point. and such a much needed big opportunity for 7news melbourne with the darby day leadin.

    1. I think if that’s the decision then better off to bail and do all the news in studio and cross to Flemington for sport. The audio glitches and seating of presenters suggested something was awry. As it happens Seven News won the night in Melbourne and nationally.
