Veteran sports reporter Leith Mulligan has been sacked by Seven News, Melbourne.
He has been with the network since 2008.
Mulligan told The Age that Melbourne news director Simon Pristel, former Herald Sun editor, advised his contract would not be renewed. Despite being given the option of working until his contract expires in eight weeks, he chose to leave immediately.
Mulligan’s sacking comes two days after he won a Melbourne Racing Club media award for his coverage of the Caulfield Cup. He was also one of five reporters covering the Olympics for Seven.
On Twitter Mulligan said, “Goneski. Good enough to be an Olympic reporter and an award winner one day… Gone the next.
“On the look out for a job. Media exp. 23 years. Hard worker. Please dm if any opportunities. Thanks.”
Mulligan told Fairfax, “Well, they’re losing the ratings. They’re going to shake things up a bit. That means getting new people in and people he doesn’t like, out.”
When asked if he would be replaced, Pristel told The Age, “All that will become clear in the fullness of time.”
Mulligan has previously worked with Nine, TEN and WIN.

Stupid decision hopefully Leith can find another job soon. Now they have employed 2 new reporters: Michael Scanlan & Sean Sowerby.
Didn’t I read a story here a few weeks back where Peter Meakin said Seven jobs were safe?
@rach: Of course they kept Mr. Bath. Why does that surprise you?
Just plain weird.
One of the best, most consistent reporters they had. It comes off the back of some really good, crisp, packages he’d done during Victoria’s Spring Racing Carnival. Sad for Mulligan but he’s good, so doubt he’ll be out of work for long.
But I’m very curious why Simon Pristel felt Mulligan’s face no longer fitted (perhaps), or indeed just how this latest decision fits in with whatever Pristel’s ‘masterplan’ is for turning things around at 7 News Melbourne.
And they keep that “loud, shout at you” person Jim Wilson, please, We switch over whenever he is on 7 or Fox, easier to do that than turn down the volume with his shouting and “listen to me,” attitude, because I am always right!
Not watched Seven News in years because of various reasons. But if you had to find a shining light amongst everyone he was the one.Weird decision but then it is Channel 7 News in Melbourne.
Making room for a hiring from Ten?
He was the best sports reporter/presenter they’ve got. Crazy! Stupid! Ridiculous!
He also worked for Fox Sports News.
Now we wait for the rest of the dominos to begin falling.
Won’t be long.
How does he get boned yet Tim Watson survives ?
Watson stumbles through his sports reading and even after more than 10 years still looks as though he’s crapping bricks when on TV.
dissapointing he is a good reporter and good presenter, hope he gets another gig
