One in 5 Australians have a tablet device and a third of them say they are watching watched less traditional television, according to a new study.

The Australian reports a study of 1000 online Australians between the ages of 15 and 65 surveyed by Frost & Sullivan says owning a tablet has reduced the amount of time they spend watching TV shows or movies.

Around 100 hours a month is spent viewing TV sets, a figure that matches recent research by OzTAM.

But the trends favour tablets. The younger the tablet owner, the less traditional TV they watch. 39% of respondents are watching material such as YouTube, news bulletins and movie trailers on most days while half watch a movie or a TV show at least once a month.

Over half of all Australians aged 15 to 65 watch TV shows or movies at least once a month on a desktop computer or laptop.

Multitasking is also on the rise. 40% of tablet owners use their tablet while watching TV always or most of the time. The OzTAM report found that figure as high as 60%.

A recent survey of TV Tonight readers also showed around 30% of readers were using tablet devices with around 40% using second-screen devices daily.

Meanwhile, Foxtel will launch Foxtel GO on iPads with 21 channels later this week.

  1. I’m starting to use less technology daily as the number of devices increases. It’s too much trivial distraction from actual life and living. And I’ve loved using tech for over 30 years.
