Renewed: The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead has been renewed for a fourth season -but without its showrunner.

2012-12-23_0038The good news is The Walking Dead has been renewed for a fourth season.

The bad news is showrunner Glen Mazzara is to exit.

Mazarra took over after creator Frank Darabont abruptly quit early in the second season.

“Both parties acknowledge that there is a difference of opinion about where the show should go moving forward, and conclude that it is best to part ways,” network AMC and Mazzara said in a joint statement. “This decision is amicable and Glen will remain on for post-production on season 3B as showrunner and executive producer… AMC is grateful for his hard work. We are both proud of our shared success.”

In a statement Mazarra added, “My time as showrunner on The Walking Dead has been an amazing experience, but after I finish season 3, it’s time to move on. I have told the stories I wanted to tell and connected with our fans on a level that I never imagined. It doesn’t get much better than that. Thank you to everyone who has been a part of this journey.

Producer Gale Anne Hurd said, “I am appreciative and grateful to Glen for his hard work on The Walking Dead. I am supportive of AMC and Glen’s decision and know that the series is in great hands with one of the most talented and dedicated casts and crews in the business. I look forward to the show’s continued success.”

But Kurt Sutter, who worked with Mazzara on The Shield said on WhoSay:

“AMC is run by small-minded, bottom-line thinkers who have no appreciation or gratitude for the effort of it’s [sic]creative personnel.

“Time and time again we see events like what happened today with Glen Mazzara. They continue to disrespect writers, s–t on their audience and bury their network. Mazzara took the work-in-progress that was Walking Dead and turned it into a viable TV show with a future. Without him, that future is dim.”

The show returns to Foxtel in February.

  1. I’m not a fan of zombie based movies or tv shows generally, but this show works for me and I’m eagerly awaiting season 3 part 2. Down the track I hope the show can further unfold the underlying story of how and why it all started and come to a proper ending rather than drag the concept out for to long.

  2. That is a shame. Mazzara has done a great job with the 3rd season so far.

I guess Darabont and now Mazzara didn’t have the same backing from the cast and crew as Weiner.
