Airdate: Shock, Horror, Aunty.

Must-see TV for TV fan as ABC looks back on some of the broadcaster's most controversial moments.

2013-01-08_1428In what will be must-see TV for TV fans everywhere, ABC is set to screen Shock, Horror, Aunty, two specials that look back on some of the broadcaster’s most controversial moments.

Craig Reucassel will host “direct from ABC TV’s complaints desk” as he looks back on incidents that sparked shock and outrage amongst viewers, including footage of Norman Gunston, Alvin Purple, Elle McFeast, John Safran, Andrew Denton and of course The Chaser boys themselves.

It notes The Chaser‘s APEC stunt, but will it replay the Make-A-Wish sketch too? Or will there be some deemed too hot for re-broadcasting (any suggestions?)?

It also includes At Home with Julia‘s ‘sex under the flag’ scene …..bit concerned it may mention a certain blog’s part in that scandal!

Nevertheless, I love this idea…..

Hosted by The Chaser’s Craig Reucassel direct from ABC TV’s complaints desk, Shock Horror Aunty shines the spotlight on ABC Comedy that generated outrage amongst viewers, the media, or ABC TV management over the last few decades.

In two half-hour specials, we mine the archives of ABC Comedy and deliver some of the most controversial moments in ABC TV Comedy history. Programs that took risks pushing the boundaries of their time and we look at what all the fuss was about. Shock Horror Aunty will shock, delight and entertain.

From Norman Gunston upstaging Gough Whitlam at The Dismissal, we revisit Elle McFeast’s infamous bosom dance, a naked Alvin Purple and friend cavorting in a bathtub of spaghetti. There’s also the nude band on Andrew Denton’s Blah Blah Blah and John Safran turning the current affairs table on Ray Martin. Of course it wouldn’t be complete without The Chaser’s APEC stunt.

Joining Craig to find out why Aunty’s comedy has got us hot under the collar are some of the names who pushed the boundaries:

Andrew Denton one of Australia’s television icons spills the beans on what happened when the all male nude band went to air.

Libbi Gorr (Elle McFeast) was one of the most comically groundbreaking characters of her decade. She was brazen, brash, yet charmingly disarming; with shows such as Live and Sweaty, McFeast, and Sex, Guys and Videotape.

Phil Lloyd
Creator and star of the groundbreaking comedy series Review with Myles Barlow talks about having paid sex with a prostitute, and At Home with Julia, in particular the infamous ‘PM having sex under the Australian flag’ scene.

Graeme Blundell
Writer, actor and TV commentator talks about his role in the permissive 1970s as the loveable and naughty Alvin Purple.

Paul McDermott
One third of the irreverent comedy group Doug Anthony All Stars recalls some of the more outrageous moments when they performed regularly on The Big Gig to a legion of loyal fans.

Wednesday 6 and 13 February 8.30pm on ABC1.

  1. Alvin Purple! I doubt many readers here would remember it. I was only in school when it was first broadcast, so no watching it, although I did get a short peek one night. As far as I know it has never been repeated.
