2013-01-21_0107HBO is developing a third World War II miniseries from Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg.

Following on from Band of Brothers and The Pacific, the Hollywood heavyweights will produce an (untitled) miniseries on the aerial wars through the eyes of the men of the Eighth Air Force.

The Hollywood Reporter notes it will be based on Donald L. Miller’s Masters of the Air: America’s Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany.

Both earlier miniseries have been epic in scale, produced at $125 million and $200 million respectively. But each cleaned up during awards season with Brothers nominated for 19 Emmys and The Pacific taking home eight Emmys in 2010.

  1. I agree with the guys below, ‘Band of Brothers’ was a hard act to follow. I felt both series suffered a little from poor character development and tracking. The battle scenes in both were excellent and believeable. But ‘The Pacific’ had a difficult brief, as it was a particularly nasty theatre of war, so it was always going to be heavy going and depressing. And so it was.
@Dayman is right. With only a few flyable WW2 planes left the CGI had better be first class.

  2. Like Dayman I loved Brothers but was ‘meh’ about Pacific. Think I watched part of the second ep before giving it away. So, obviously hope this will be much more like the first in execution.

  3. To be honest, The Pacific never grabbed me. Band of Brothers was just so much better.

However of course i’d be looking forward to this. I just hope they learn from the mistakes of The Pacific and open this up to a wider scale, have a better context and more characters and not have it so repetitive.

This would be CGI heavy, hopefully there’s enough money to make it look decent.
