Arrested Development hints at new approach

Cast and creatives explain how the rebooted Arrested Development will differ from the show we know and love.

2013-01-10_1937Key cast members of Arrested Development gathered before US media this week, ahead of the rebooted series produced for Netflix.

In attendance were EP Mitch Hurwitz and stars Jeffrey Tambor, Will Arnett, Jessica Walter, Jason Bateman, Alia Shawkat, Michael Cera and Portia de Rossi.

One of the few pieces of news that emerged from the session was that the plot narratives may differ this time around.

Instead of seeing everyone in every episode, the plots will focus on one individual’s story arc.

“Our family had drifted apart,” Hurwitz said. “The only way we could get together was to dedicate each episode to a different character’s point of view. That became really fun because we’d find that some of the stories intersect. It’s kind of an evolution of the storytelling that was necessary.”.

“It’s one giant Arrested Development,” he continued. “When we were all talking about it, we wanted to find a way to jump from one story to another, in a sort of ‘choose your own adventure.’ ”

I’m guessing everyone calls it Series 4 regardless. They haven’t really invented a word that satisfactorily covers all of that…

Jason Bateman added: “It is not ‘season four’; we should probably make that clear. Everybody sort of intermingles through each person’s individual episode, but it is a ‘Lindsay’ episode or a ‘Gob’ episode that we guest star in.”

  1. It will be interesting to see where this show ends up here. Just because Seven had the rights to it before it did end and is now being resurrected. It could end up on another network which wouldn’t surprise me. Under Netflix it means different things.

Can’t wait to see it though. Was one of the best comedies ever made and was sad to see it axed the first time around.

  2. I think that’s splendid news. AD aficionados (one of whom I am) should be happy that they are not going to attempt to simply recreate the old magic because that approach rarely works in any endeavour, TV or otherwise.
There’s not much on TV that appeals to to a jaded soul like me any more – and I know I’m setting myself up for disappointment – but I am almost quivering with anticipation for AD’s return!
