2.23m as My Kitchen Rules crushes The Block, MasterChef.

2.23m for MKR as Seven leaves The Block and Masterchef under the magic million.

2013-02-05_1002We’re not even in ratings season yet but the game is on. Or as My Kitchen Rules would put it, “Game on, moll.”

Last night’s episode with Jessie and Biswa’s disastrous Indian cuisine dinner party proved irresistible to viewers with a whopping 2.23m viewers.

It left the competition on Nine and TEN in its wake.

The Block: All Stars debuted with 959,000 viewers and MasterChef: The Professionals simmering on a tepid 627,000.

It was the first night all three had gone head to head in the early evening, although Nine got a jump start with The Block by 30 minutes. All three aired simultaneously between 7:30 – 8:00.

For Seven to increase its margin, and by a country mile, shows the strength of its MKR brand. It was the highest rated episode outside of last year’s MKR finale. By contrast The Block had its lowest-ever launch and MasterChef sank to its lowest numbers outside of a Masterclass episode, fourth in its timeslot.

Seven also scored 1.5m for the return of Revenge.

TEN had better news from Sunday night with Elementary‘s premiere of 1.23m but it faces stiff competition from Downton Abbey, Midsomer Murders and cricket this Sunday.

  1. Seven took one look at the “spice girls” and rubbed their hands with glee. Run them ad nauseum throughout the tennis and the idiots at home wont be able to refuse the banality of it all. They are MKR answer to those two birds off The Shire.
Add a bitchy gay guy and hey presto! The viewing public has spoken.
Please dont compare MKR to Masterchef, Please!!!

  2. actually monk you don’t really know that, there have been various ‘behind the scenes’ type articles on how MKR & other ‘reality’ shows are made.that reveal that things are not always as they seem, an excellent
one appeared on this site only a few weeks ago.
Given how highly produced & edited they are its quite likely other
teams also made ‘bitchy’ comments & for whatever reason the producers
chose not to edit it into the final cut. Maybe because the other team
sounded better at being villians, or in the case of Jake, it neatly fits
into a stereo type that the producers know is easily lapped up by the average viewer.

  3. ricoz. No-one made them out to be the villians of the show. They did a pretty good job all on their own. Perhaps someone should tell them it isn’t the early 00’s, and being a “bitch” isn’t cool any more.
I saw one funny meme of them, it went something like.
    “joined a cooking show”
    “Doesn’t like food”

I guess I’ll join you in praising Mythbusters as well as agreeing it was hilarious. The only peeve was they had enough footage to start at 7.30pm and end at 8.30pm. Yet they chose to be late. That just makes me watch the ABC at 7.30pm. Still I really loved the show.

As for the Sherlock/Elementary debate. Sherlock is best. But I could enjoy Elementary. I know of someone that missed the episode and would watch a repeat. I guess I better hope they repeat the show next summer from the start if I want to catch it on TV. If not, then I’m glad I could watch the first episode. Thank you.

P.S. If you do show it again sometime I hope you could consider not having the “encore” transparency all the time. If you must can’t you just have it show up after the ad breaks; then disappear. It’d be kinder on the viewers.

  5. I dunno. All I can say is well done MKR. Seems well produced so far.
I couldn’t wait to watch the Spice Girls spectacularyly fail. You could see it coming a mile away. It was like a train smash waiting to happen.
Even with clever editing, I’d say what was shown was a fair representaion of what happend on the day for them.
Sorry but it doesn’t seem like they are up to the challenge cooking wise and they got just deserts 😛

  6. I don’t know why i’m waching this bunch of idiots, but it did inspire me to make a chicken biryani tonight. Tomorrow i might do a bbq and set my kitchen on fire

  7. Sadly, none of this is about the relative quality or production values of these three shows. If it was, MKR would be running third. The power of advertising and cynical casting…works every time!

  8. Lets be fair here, because if Marco Marco Marco read out the rating figures 627000, 627000, 627000 that would then equate them out to 1,881000.

I wonder if its the appeal of the one programme over another, or is there one that is becoming more of a turn off, turn off, turn off?

  9. You know they are on a winner when conservative friends who normally hate reality tv say they are hooked on MKR. Its make me want to watch to see what the fuss is all about.

  10. It is a shame about some racist hate comments made about this team in social media. Finally we get to see a reality team different from the typical safe Anglo-Aussie casting, however they seem to be made out to be the villains of the show.

  11. Aussies sure like safe and unchallenging programming. Pretty sad really.

I don’t actually think ABC has all that much to offer (apart from a show here or there), but it is disappointing that Networks like Ten look at results like this and will no doubt react by thinking they t need to dumb down their dramas and sanitise their non scripted.

  12. Simply do not understand it…the show is soo contrived….missing ingredients…fires…bickering…breakdowns….just to much to be real….like someone else said…if you were going on such a show…you would perfect your dishes to the best of your ability….
Like 60 Minute Makeover…did they really do it in that time…of course not…get real….

  13. i cant criticise MKR, as its obviously a masterful show…2.23 million people cant be wrong…I just have never watched it… the formula of backstabbing contestants doesnt do it for me…on any reality show (the Block, they started off friendly but Dan and Danni wont take much to start)…i watch the news to see people take down others…but having said that im in the minority so anything else will do for now, happy viewing everyone

  14. MKR people are amateurs, not used to talking on TV, dodging a camera team, working with unfamiliar ingredients and cooking under pressure at the same time.

And some are picked to fail — Jessie and Biswa were selected because they were critical of Western food, didn’t know what they were talking about and would fail spectacularly. They did it all very well.

Jake looks like he was picked to be arrogant but good enough to hang around as a baddie. We shall find out after tonight. And then there is a whole ‘nother pool to check out.
