Axed: The Hour

Sorry about that cliffhanger .....time is up for The Hour.

6hrTime is up for The Hour.

Despite a cliffhanger for its Season Two finale, the BBC has decided not to proceed with a third season.

The Kudos Film and Television production’s accolades include nominations for four BAFTAs, two Golden Globes and an Emmy.

The series originally premiered on BBC Two in the UK in July 2011. The second season, co-produced by BBC America, wrapped in Australia last week.

Jane Featherstone, chief executive of Kudos Film and Television, admitted she was “sad and disappointed” by the decision, given The Hour’s strong cast, including Ben Whishaw, Dominic West and Romola Garai, and its critical acclaim. She added that the original ambition was to produce three series.

This week the BBC renewed other dramas including Call the Midwife and Death in Paradise as well as announcing new dramas including Burton And Taylor with Dominic West as Richard Burton.

A BBC spokesperson said: “We loved the show but have to make hard choices to bring new shows through.”

  1. This is a shame, there was definitely scope to do a 3rd and final series, based on the Profumo Affair of the early 1960s perhaps.
Any chance ITV or an independent production company could take up the slack?
I wanna know if Freddie died or not etc.

Oh well, at least Ben Whisaw is going to be in a few movies this year, and doing a play with Judi Dench in London

  2. This is complete madness! Only the idiots at the Beeb would kill one of the best shows they have while renewing very ordinary tosh like Call the Midwife and Death in Paradise. Burton and Taylor? Give me a break, I know how that one ends…

  3. Sorry to hear this news. The cliffhanger ending of series 2 gave every indication that the storyline would continue into another series if only to reveal Freddie’s fate. Great cast and great acting.

  4. So devastated! Sure, it wasn’t a perfect show, but it had interesting characters and storylines, better than a lot of the rubbish we see on TV. I enjoyed the second series even more than the first, so this is disappointing. Sigh.

  5. No surprises there. Very weak scripts – not as bad as Downton Series 2 but still most scenes are quite implausible.
Parade’s End – now there’s some script writing (but it’s by Tom Stoppard).

  6. That’s very sad news.

I have enjoyed the first two series of The Hour.

Now we’ll never know if Freddie survived the beating.

Or if he finally gets together with Bel.
