Former motor racing champion Alan Jones will join TEN’s Formula One commentary team.

Alan JonesFormer motor racing champion Alan Jones will join TEN’s Formula One commentary team, alongside Greg Rust and Daryl Beattie for  the 2013 Formula One World Championship next month.

Jones is one of only two Australians to have ever won the Formula One World Championship.

TEN’s Head of Sport, David Barham, said: “We are delighted that Alan is joining the Formula One commentary team in 2013. He brings strong opinion, great knowledge, experience and profile to the home of premium motorsport. It is a real coup for viewers and fans.”

Jones added: “Motor racing has been my passion and love all my life and to be given the opportunity with TEN to talk about it and share that passion with other people is something that I’m really looking forward to.”

With a Formula One career that started in 1976 and spanned 11 years, Alan has won a remarkable 12 Grand Prix races from 116 starts. He raced into international limelight with his first Formula One victory in 1977, the Austrian Grand Prix at Osterreichring, taking the chequered flag ahead of Austria’s world champion Niki Lauda.

Alan then began a highly successful four-year stint with the Williams Grand Prix team. In 1979, they won four Grand Prix races and finished third in the world championship.

The pinnacle of Alan’s Formula One career came in 1980 when, after winning grand prix races in Argentina, Great Britain, Canada and the United States, he was declared World Champion. He is also the last Australian driver to win a Grand Prix on home soil.

2013 Formula One Australian Grand Prix, live and exclusive on TEN and ONE, Friday, March 15, to Sunday, March 17.

  1. @Maev – I knew exactly which Alan Jones I was referring to. Just because he’s Australia’s only F1 World Champ doesn’t mean he doesn’t (as Josh pointed out) only talk about what it was like when he raced. He’s been out of the sport for over 30 years – I no longer consider what he has to say relevent (if it ever was).

  2. They’ve had Jonesy on a couple of times the last year or two when one or more regular hosts were unavailable. I thought he was alright.

Craig Baird races in the Porsche Cup and NZ V8 series (plus anything he can get his hands on) so has always had to juggle his commitments. Presumably there were too many clashes this year and he’s had to make a choice.

At least we won’t have to put up with Paul Henry making a prat of himself again at the Aus GP. I just hope that Ten can restrain themselves from trying to thrust various random personalities who have nothing to do with F1 on us. Pretty sure there’s not much crossover between F1 fans keen enough to watch the build-up to the big race and Bondi {insert occupation} or Naybores.

  3. Maev, AJ cohosted F1 on Nine with Darryl Eastlake. He talked about the glory days and not so much about what was relevant.

He’ll fit TEN’s coverage. If they put it on TEN, and delay it in Perth, there’d be a lynch mob

  4. @ Shelley….did you actually read the story or look at the picture…or did you just glance at the post previous to yours….
As DK said ‘Formula One World Champion’…
    Not radio person!!

  5. @Col Mustard: Actually Channel TEN gave (radio) Alan Jones his own show in 1994 modelled on Larry King Live. Derryn Hinch was sacked to make way for him. The show lasted just six weeks.

  6. AJ, knows what he was talking about where is Bairdo had his racing commitments but good pick up David Barham. Can’t wait to Albert Park as I was fearing that it will be shown on TEN and not simulcast with ONE which I am pleased I can get see it in full high definition
