Nine News on Monday night will reveal details of The Herald, a sunken ship lost for over 120 years at the bottom of Sydney Harbour.
Peter Harvey and Nine News take you on a journey to discover the treasure that’s been hidden right under our noses.
“Sydney Harbour holds some deep secrets from the colony’s earliest days…ships lost and forgotten. History is only now rising from dark waters,” Peter says.
“There is a graveyard of sunken ships right on our doorstep.”
Imported in pieces from Britain in 1855 – “The Herald” was soon busy on a bridgeless Sydney Harbour…
1884 – and an exploding boiler scuttled the steam powered twin paddle wheeler as she was about to tow a sailing ship to its berth.
The two crewmen jumping clear as she went down.
And now the Herald lies buried in the sand – traces of the two long boilers and part of the shaft that drove the paddle wheels.
Peter Harvey’s Special Report on Nine News, Monday, February 18 at 6pm.

Ah yes – perhaps they will find the circulation figures for the Sydney Morning Herald down there as well.
That splash you just heard was Seven’s underwater cameraman jumping in, having discovered that “The wreck site lies at a depth of 26 metres (85 ft) to 27 metres (89 ft) of water approximately 450 metres (492 yd) off North Head”. How much of the pictures will be obscured by Nine’s graffiti? “First/Only on Nine”, “Exclusive”, “Bla Bla Reporting”, etc., etc.?
The wreck was actually found six weeks ago. Hot news.
I’m pretty sure that the details were revealed in 1884 when The Herald blew up. And have been also been revealed in a Channel 9 press release.
Channel 9’s main “news” story tonight is exclusive pretty pictures of some rusted metal belonging to a 129 year old ship wreck.
a shipwreck and a tv show, there’s a combination made in heaven
I wonder if they found any of Ten’s “reality” programs from the second half of last year?
@archiearchive – I am unable to fathom what you are trying to say. Was that bathos? 😉
It will be interesting to see if there is anyone alive today in Australia with connections to the ship
Are we sure it’s not New Ltd firing a shot into Fairfax Media?
@ alvar, One does expect more true depth from a ship-wreck than a TV programme
This seems more suited to a current affairs show rather than a news bulletin – where they would have more time to go into depth.
