The Marngrook Footy Show has been thrown a lifeline by National Indigenous Television after being dumped by ABC2.
It will air on Thursdays on SBS from late March.
Host and executive producer Grant Hansen told The Age he was grateful for a social media campaign following the axing.
“Its was fantastic to see that level of support for a show that supposedly nobody watched according to the ABC,” Hansen said.
“But a lot of people did watch the program despite what the ABC would say and it is fantastic that SBS recognised that.”
Wayne Carey has signed on to appear on the show this season as a regular panellist along with former Brisbane Lions premiership player Chris Johnson, Ronnie Burns and Gilbert Macadam. News presenters Leila Gurruwiwi and Shelley Ware will also return.
An NITV spokesperson told TV Tonight, “Marngrook is a great program and a natural fit for SBS and NITV given the longstanding reputation of both channels in covering the grass roots sports which connect communities. SBS has been exploring feasible ways to continue Marngrook and those discussions continue.”
The show will be produced from Deakin University.

Great news! I will be watching!
Why not barefoot rugby league show be on NITV and SBS from 730PM and Marngrook footy show from 830PM on NITV and SBS Thursday
Not “Sex Between Soccer” anymore.
I’m with you bobmar28. The Barefoot Rugby League Show was the best Rugby League show on TV. It is outrageous they got rid of it!
Agree pure AFL not a entrainment show 🙂
Hallelujah! Should never have been dumped in the first place.
Great decision. Great show, regardless of whether you’re indigenous or not.
Curious decision. Nothing for the 60 percent of indigenous Australians who live in NSW and QLD where rugby league is the preferred code.
Bring back the Barefoot rugby league show.
