World Movies goes Mardi Gras

World Movies gets into the spirit of Mardi Gras with a week long screening of gay films from across the world.

2013-02-15_0111World Movies gets into the spirit of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras with a week long screening of gay films from across the world, including Mala Noche, Circumstance and A Single Man.

In the days leading up to the biggest weekend in the gay calendar, we’re screening six thought-provoking and sexy films every night at 8.30pm in partnership with Queer Screen and Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.

WM Mardi Gras visits the early classics of queer cinema with Mala Noche (1986) – the outstanding debut film from award-winning director Gus Van Sant about a man in love with a Mexican immigrant. Then tune in for cutting edge premiere films, including Tom Ford’s A Single Man which follows a day in the life of a college professor (Colin Firth) who is struggling with the loss of his partner. There’s also the Australian television premiere of Weekend, the festival favourite about two men who spend an unforgettable two days together.

This week-long celebration sees World Movies bring the stories of LGBTIQ people from around the world to your TV screen, with some of the finest international queer cinema. The taboo of two Iranian girls in love is explored in the Sundance award-winner Circumstance, while one man’s struggle to come out to his Italian family is explored with hilarious results in Loose Cannons. Don’t miss the astonishing debut from French Canadian rising star Xavier Dolan, whose film I Killed My Mother won the hearts of critics and audiences worldwide.

“Mardi Gras is a time to celebrate the stories of the queer community around the world, and we are thrilled to contribute with a week of international film this February,” said Chris Keely, GM of World Movies. “From early masterpieces to the movies that tell us what it’s like to be gay or lesbian today, WM Mardi Gras includes wildly different voices and experiences from filmmakers in Iran, the UK, Italy, Quebec and more.”

“Mardi Gras is not only about the Australian LGBTIQ community, it’s about recognising the achievements and struggles of similar communities around the world,” said Michael Rolik, CEO of Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. “While some countries have legalised gay marriage, others deem homosexuality punishable by death. It is important to tell these stories in all kinds of ways, and we’re thrilled to partner with World Movies and do that through television this year with WM Mardi Gras.”

“At Queer Screen we recognise the power of film to reveal the wildly diverse experiences of LGBTIQ people everywhere,” said Queer Screen’s Festival Director, Jain Moralee. “WM Mardi Gras is set to bring the most influential queer cinema to the small screen, most of which we’ve been honoured to premiere at previous Mardi Gras Film Festivals. We hope working with World Movies will introduce new audiences to the vibrant world of queer cinema.”
