Contestants apologise to MKR pair

MKR contestants have apologised to Angela & Melina for partaking in on-air criticism.

2013-03-24_0150Last week there were some interesting comments given to the press by My Kitchen Rules evictees, Angela Kennedy and Melina Bagnato.

Both criticised Ashlee Pham and Sophia Poh, telling News Limited, “They never said anything to our faces. Everything (criticism) was done behind our backs.

“It is a real disappointment and I actually feel sorry for them.”

Recently eliminated Mick Newell, of the Tasmanian father-and-son team, also told Fairfax, “They are not acting – as when the cameras were off they were just as nasty,” he said. “It’s good casting.”

But the Victorian women even had reservations about the show.

“If I had known what I know now, I’m not sure I would have done it,” Kennedy says.

“I have a three-year-old son, Patrick, and I don’t think it is nice for him to see his mum in that situation.

“I am proud of the way Melina and I handled it…but in hindsight I didn’t realise it was ever going to be that bad.”

Both have been contacted by several MKR contestants apologising for joining in on Ashlee and Sophia’s criticism of them on air. For a show about cooking, it borders on levels of bullying.

“I’ve had a lot of contestants since the show has aired come and apologise to me and Melina, saying they had no idea how bad it was,” Kennedy said.

“We did try and explain it to them (when it was being recorded), but they didn’t quite get it.”

  1. I have only seen one episode of the show – but any one could follow this by just watching a promo (remember the bitchy comments re the age of one of the contestants on an advert?).

You can say what you like about Masterchef – but there has been very few incidents of this type of snarky, nasty, bulling behavior on MC. Isn’t that why MC was praised when it first went on air? It makes me sad to see this behavior aired on tv and to be milked for all it is worth by the makers and 7 in general. I can imagine it is a show that families watch together. What is this teaching children? (I sound like Maude Flanders – “Won’t someone think of the children!”). I don’t have kids myself but don’t think this is healthy.

I hope the new bake-off show isn’t like this! Or else I’m sticking to re-runs of Voyager on 11 (not even the Borg were this nasty……)

  2. Cooking has always taken a bit of a back seat in MKR but this season it has barely even been along for the ride… the show has become ugly TV more focused on bullying and bitchiness and the producers have only sought to exploit that more and more, and I can’t be bothered watching that.

  3. Interesting to read that Dan and Steph said Angela and Melina wernt exactly perfect either. But as the compeition has finished I uess they are now catching up on whats happening.

The thing is you cant all have a group of nice contestants. I dont agree with what Ashlee and Sophie said most of the time and didnt like the way they targeted angela and melina.

Because of what they say then there comments get aired more.

  4. The whole situation doesn’t really make sense to me.

If Ashlee and Sophia was saying criticism behind their backs, I’m assuming this meant to the other contestants because i don’t think Angela and Melina would have been privy to their confessionals at the time of filming, right? But then Angela and Melina goes on and says they tried to explain it to the other contestants, but wouldn’t the contestants already know about the criticism? And if Tasmania said Ashlee and Sophia was just as nasty off camera, why does Angela and Melina need to explain anything?

I just think this is blown way out of proportion and i don’t think Ashlee or Sophia have ‘bullied’ anyone rather it is channel 7’s selective editing that has painted it that way and the eliminated contestants are capitalising on that with their exit interviews.

  5. I just wish that people that go on “reality” shows realise that they are effectively signing over their reputations to the producers and editors of that show… who seem to have absolutely no desire to protect them in any way shape or form.

And as to the comment about Ashlee and Sophia not acting… look at this week’s promo about their “fight”, I have seen better acting on Days Of Our Lives 😉

  6. I never watched the show, but at least some contestants had the decency to apologise since it aired. I guess it took them watching themselves back to realise what they had done.

  7. I know everyone says not to go on a reality tv show without knowing the consequences but Seven and MKR have really pushed the boundaries of acceptable behaviour this season.
I totally agree with the comment about it bordering on bullying. Not nice, especially when so many people, particularly children struggle with being bullied. MKR has now made bullying entertainment. Get back to what the show is meant to be about, cooking.
