    1. “Channel Nine announced the launch of Extra 2, a time shifted version of their existing Extra service. Extra 2 will appear on Channel 95 from April, and service Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Northern NSW.”

  1. Surely these infomercial channels are purely and simply a revenue stream for the network?

As long as the revenue gained exceeds the cost of running the channel, they’ll be broadcasting.

There cannot possibly be even the faintest thought given to ratings and viewing numbers.

  2. David, your article posting bot has put this one up a couple of days early. This has to be a wind-up, surely? Do people really want to see a specific program pushing crap and get upset if they miss it?

I haven’t even looked at Go since I started to watch a movie on there a few months ago and had to switch over because the compression artifacts were so bad. This won’t improve things.

Apart from the 20 hrs pw that they are mandated to show, Nine should just make GEM a SD channel and boost the bitrate on 9 and Go. Most of the stuff they show on GEM is not HD anyway (or even widescreen a lot of the time).

To anyone suggesting that Nine should add a +2 for one of their broadcast channels –
    1. they do not have the bandwidth
    2. current legislation only allows the commercial networks 1 HD and 2 SD digital broadcast channels.

  3. I have serious doubts about the human race. Not so much that there are people who want to watch such brain numbing channels, but that there TV executives who think this duplication is a good idea.

Where is Conroy/ACMA when you need them?

  4. As if Free To Air TV isn’t already starved of available bandwidth for even a good quality SD image, let alone HD quality, now they do this. Morons!

  5. Yeah – why? I can’t imagine anyone having the slightest interest in these channels. Aren’t we bombarded with enough advertising as it is, without seeking it out?

  6. Hey why not time shift the main channel like they do in the UK. If Masterchef had of been on at 9.30 each night I may have been more inclined to watch, I did record but never got back to it.

  7. May as well have a 24 hour loop of Micallef’s Bunnings and ABC Shop ads from Newstopia and Mad as Hell. Silent Witness megaphones and decorative mouse gardens make just as much sense as all these shopping channels (oops I meant “datacasting”).
