Report: Grant Denyer to quit Sunrise

Update: Grant Denyer has announced he is quitting the Seven show to spend more time with family.

2013-03-28_0203Grant Denyer will reportedly announce he is quitting the Seven show today.

News Limited claims the presenter will exit due to ‘a chronic fatigue-type illness which has left him constantly exhausted and unable to cope with the early mornings and endless travel.’

Denyer was the fulltime weather presenter on the show from 2004 to 2006 and then returned in 2010 but also married and became a father.

As well as the relentless early rises, the role demands a lot of travel to the corners of the country, by both air and road.

In 2011 he noted, “You get to see some of the great places of the country, (but) it is at breakneck speed and it can’t be sustained.

“There has to be some normality pretty soon. I am not going to sacrifice my lifestyle just for a breakfast television show; it’s not worth it.”

Weekend Sunrise weatherman James Tobin, is tipped take over the role until Seven announces a replacement.

But does Seven have another role for the former Australia’s Got Talent host….?

UPDATE: This morning he told viewers he was looking forward to more time with his family.

“It’s the greatest job in the world, but … now that Sailor is nearly two she probably needs to find out who her dad is,” he said.

Media also speculates he is in talks with Nine.

  1. I have watched Grant from the beginning – and have loved every moment of it. Not at all annoying. He seems a very funny, down to earth guy. I also had the pleasure to run into him one year at the Easter Show while sitting down enjoying a lunch break, and he was more than happy to stand up and have his photo taken with my kids and say hello! All the best GD.

  2. As a non breakfast show watcher, I didn’t even know Grant D was still on television (I suspect I could say that about a lot of people who I’ve presumed have disappeared) – however I did find him rather irritating. As others have said, entertaining and fresh at the beginning, but that huge grin became annoying after a while.

  3. The old Family explanation trotted out again. Geez, when you want to switch camps or about to get the sack funny how people are always wanting to travel and/or spend time with family.

  4. Im assuming Grant will become 7’s new Tom Williams just doing the specials every now and then…

Thats all 7 seemed to do in the early/mid 00’s was use their presenters way too much then they have to cut them back to 1 or no shows.

  5. Heaven forbid the networks ever employee a real weather person who actually knows what the words on the teleprompter mean, and not just some pretty face.

  6. Sad to see Denyer go but all good things etc.Certainly the end of a golden era. Tobin would be a fine replacement – he’s also kinda down to earth yet loads of fun.

  7. I’m actually quite happy about this. Denyer and his OTT presenting style was quite irritating at that time of the morning. I hope he is replaced by James Tobin. Tobin just has an easy style and is pleasant to watch. I’ll enjoy waking up with him each morning…I wish 🙂

  8. They actually did have a farewell for Grand and wished him the best after his last weather cross, so there was no need to do so at the end of the show.

  9. @ David Knox

Gee whiz, I thought I was on topic, with this one, where regardless if its Grant, James or who ever else, they will all suffer burn out if they try to meet the demands the networks and EP’s demand,(not the viewers) and for what reason?, Grant raised work life balances, travel to far reaches of the country and at breakneck speeds, and what is HR’s role in all this?

They virtually have two full time presenters in Grant and James, why not alternate between them, and between country and local locations, this would allow the country presenter (both Grant or James) to present the remote location weather every second day, and the local presenter to do the days in between, thus allowing reasonable work life balances for both and at a much safer pace.

    1. Not sure I agree with your point but at least I understood it better thanks. These kinds of shows prefer one weather presenter for branding and costing purposes rather than job-sharing. James Tobin is weekend weather presenter but has been doing more when Grant Denyer has been unable. Nice to see he is well liked.

  10. Watched the last 15 min of the show and they made a big deal of the publicist leaving and no mention of Grant at the end. So I guess that means he has crossed the line to another network

  11. Sorry but I am confused, and compare the intensity imposed on some weather presenter’s such as,advertorials, antics and locations etc, to the very similar intensity.of the media hype in general, with their advertorials and antics of news bulletins, popular family and current affair programmes etc.
When they often claim that everybody is greatly concerned and deeply interested in political events resulting in endless hours of “Media Hype verging almost to a state of Hysteria “,and I cite possibly the greatest example of all, with the constant media hype of yet “Another Rudd Challenge” where the media continually generated, engineered and thrust under our noses and down our throats “Their Own Obsessions” and not necessarily Ours.

Therefore I liken the hype of the morning weather presenters(why not evening weather performers?) in exactly the same media hype category, where all the hype is driven by the direct expectations of networks and their respective executive producers, while many topics, locations and performances may definitely benefit some community service events, but just how many are just extended revenue raising advertorials. .

How many viewers have tuned out because the Hosts have filled in, and presented the weather?

    1. Byeana: I have trouble understanding some of your comments in relation to the topic. I’m beginning to think someone needs their own blog!

Maxxdude: Stating he is the most egotistical person on Aus TV is an opinion not a fact. He may be a polarising presenter, but below there are examples of others who have met him and are very complimentary. I always encourage readers to comment on the on-screen content, rather than personal life or what they presume.

  12. Thank God he is going…I don’t watch Sunrise but did watch AGT for a short while until he drove me away. He is the most egotistical TV oersonality in Australia. Even more than Koch & Mel (the other reasons I don’t watch Sunrise).
Tim Campbell would be a great host of AGT & James Tobin is a decent personality.

  13. I too like James Tobin and would be happy to see him do the weather. I was hoping Tim Campbell might get the hosting gig for AGT, but if Grant Denyer is host, that is an extra reason I won’t be watching. Surely Channel 9 can come up with someone else.

  14. I liked Grant always found him funny and entertaining. I actually met him when I lived in Sydney, and he was very engaging and friendly, not stand offish at all.

You have to be pretty fearless to do that job, jumping out of planes and abseiling among other things. I’m scared of heights so would be no good at it.

  15. Go away haters and critics. He’s a great weatherman, always take us around Australia every morning to sometimes very unsual places where we never been before. You’ll be missed, GD.

  16. I hope James Tobin is his replacement, they could easily find someone to do the weather on weekend sunrise.

Grant has had more comebacks on this show than Johnny Farnham but he will be missed and it would be weird to see him on 9 if rumours are true.

  17. James seems to be doing a good enough job to replace him. I also loved Rachael Finch when she filled in. She had a lovable wacky way about her.The job is a hard one and I suggest to get 2 replacements as job is too demanding for one.. Get someone to go out bush a few times a week and do the weather and find some great Aussie characters and another one to do the city or studio base.

  18. OK all you armchair critics .. GD is a champ who has entertained in a difficult time slot coming up with fresh material 6 times a morning x 5 and traveling to every corner of the country , just wish him well .. man people are tough !
