5cmdCall the Midwife returns to ABC1 on Sunday night for its second season.

It kicks off with a 75 minute telemovie, which aired as a Christmas special in the UK.

Christmas is coming and in Poplar the nuns and midwives of Nonnatus House are busier than ever. When an abandoned baby is discovered on the steps of the convent, the whole community rallies round to provide food and clothing and to try and trace his mother. Who would be desperate enough to do such a thing?

Nurse Jenny Lee (Jessica Raine) gets caught up in the heartbreaking mystery which surrounds an elderly, semi-vagrant local woman, Mrs Jenkins (Sheila Reid). Word soon spreads around the expectant mums when Dr Turner (Stephen McGann) introduces the latest pain-killer – gas and air. It’s not long before all the women want a taste of it.

For newly married Chummy (Miranda Hart) other challenges await as she pulls out all the stops to mount a truly memorable children’s nativity play.

8:30pm Sunday on ABC1.

  1. I agree Ronnie. But don’t you just love the poor but cheerful English working class on Call the Midwife? They are so quaint with their funny working class accents and their little rented houses.

  2. Dr. Blake on Friday 830, George Gently on Saturday 830 and Call the Midwife Sunday 830. Hmmm – Does the ABC has us totally worked out or is this feeling a little same same?
