Airdate: Road Warrior Trip

This SBS 2 series about two Kenyans stars one of the most natural TV presenters I have ever seen.

2013-04-01_2329The best thing I’ve seen on SBS 2 so far (and I’m yet to sample all the titles) is tonight’s National Geographic doco Road Warrior Trip.

It follows two young Kenyan tour guides, Boni and Lemarti, first in their native Kenya, then whisked away to New York and Texas -their first taste of a western metropolis.

One even meets Janice Dickinson as he prepares for his first attempt at dating a local New Yorker. “She has to be able to catch fish,” he insists.

But first we see them teaching native Massai warriors about survival. I never knew the best way to avoid rhinos is to climb a tree.

Warrior Road Trip is a cross-continental exploratory journey beginning in Kenya.  Boni and Lemarti delve into the heart of the Maasai culture and the values by which every warrior must live. Afterwards they embark on a cultural odyssey to experience the Western world while staying true to their tribal values. The series introduces viewers to America through the eyes of these warriors – who rarely abandon their traditional clothes or spears – as their naturalistic approach collides with the fast-paced, mass-consumption of Western lifestyle. Viewers can experience the wonder, cultural immersion and fundamental similarities holding us all together as one.

Aside from the bold premise, I have to say Lemarti is one of the most natural presenters I think I have ever seen. He is utterly engaging without any fakery or pretension and a born storyteller.

And they’re both way cool.

Road Warrior Trip starts tonight 9:30pm on SBS 2.
