Delia, who has Maltese heritage, had a launch for his very first series on Monday night at Crown, which was attended by key bloggers and Adriano Zumbo. Trust me, the food on offer was scrummy and he is very relaxed in front of the camera.

If you live in Melbourne, Delia will also be serving up the dishes at his own Maha restaurant after each episode airs.

Shane Delia’s Spice Journey takes a culinary pilgrimage to explore the award-winning chef’s heritage and discover Middle Eastern food traditions that date back thousands of years.

Shane takes a break from his prized restaurant Maha in Melbourne’s CBD to explore his second great passion after cooking; his family history. He looks forward to bringing back from the exotic Middle East a multitude of age-old Arab and Persian recipes to adapt with his own distinctive flair.

Shane’s journey starts in his homeland, the old Phoenician outpost of Malta where aromatics and spices of the Middle East mingle with the European traditions of the Mediterranean to produce a wonderfully unique food culture. It is here in this island archipelago that Shane’s love of cooking was born many years prior.

Shane then heads across the sea to Lebanon; seat of the ancient Phoenician Empire, original Land of Milk and Honey and the birthplace of contemporary Middle Eastern mezze. Here Shane experiences the ancient civilisations that shaped the landscape, and left their mark behind in the regional cuisine. Finally Shane follows the time-worn caravan trails of the spice route to ancient Persia which is today known as Iran. Home to saffron, pomegranate and rose water and the oldest surviving recipes on earth, Shane finds in Iran’s tearooms, walled gardens and nomad tents, an Iran very different to anything he had previously imagined.

Shane’s genuine enthusiasm for food and culture comes together in an aromatic blend of colour and taste in Shane Delia’s Spice Journey. This brand new food and travel series is sure to inspire as Shane takes a grand gastronomic pilgrimage that captures his cheeky personality and zest for life.

Shane Delia’s Spice Journey is produced for SBS by Essential Media.

Thursday 2 May at 7.30pm on SBS ONE.
