A flop on TEN, but how can 50 million Chinese viewers be wrong?

taken-out33Remember James Kerley in 2008’s dating show Taken Out?

The speed-dating format was developed by FremantleMedia in France, but was first commissioned in Australia for TEN.

In a nightly 7pm slot it didn’t fare too well, axed within a month of its premiere.

But it has since travelled to Denmark, Indonesia, the Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, Spain, Japan and the UK as Take Me Out.

Tomorrow night SBS screens the Chinese adaptation, If You Are the One, which has become a huge hit.

With a massive 50 million viewers per episode, this popular Chinese dating show is a cultural phenomenon. Based on the Australian game show ‘Taken Out’, a lone male suitor has to impress a panel of 24 single women who switch off their podium light if he doesn’t interest them. Popular host Meng Fei runs the action in front of a large studio audience.

    50m in China is nothing. It is approximately the same as a rating of 500,000 in 5MC here. The Project is beating that this week!

  2. As Aleksandr the meerkat say: Simples! Ten just don’t know how to sell a new concept any more. If Seven or Nine had screened this, they would have managed to make it a smash hit too.
