Ryan Murphy drama for HBO

Ryan Murphy's next TV drama is described as a modern, provocative exploration of human sexuality and relationships.

2013-04-11_2348Ryan Murphy’s next TV drama Open is headed to HBO.

Murphy, whose hits include Glee, American Horror Story and Nip / Tuck, has a Pilot order for Open, described as a modern, provocative exploration of human sexuality and relationships.

Co-written with Dexter co-executive producer Lauren Gussis, the project received interest from multiple networks.

Deadline reports Open revolves around five lead characters, including a married couple of thirtysomethings, the husband’s male co-worker and a woman in her 40s who is a yoga professional.

“I’m thrilled about it,” Murphy said of HBO. “They have great projects, and this is really an adult show that is very frank in its depiction of sex.”

HBO president Michael Lombardo said, “I think it is a perfect marriage of an idea and execution. This is an area we’ve been talking about doing something in for some time, and Ryan did it in a way that is enormously engaging.

“It is a challenge how to talk about relationships and monogamy without feeling navel-gazing and neurotic, and (Murphy and Gussis) figured it out.”

Casting is expected to begin shortly for filming in the US fall.

Meanwhile a fifth-season renewal for Glee is pending, and Murphy recently unveiled that the upcoming third installment of AHS will be titled American Horror Story: Coven and will star Kathy Bates in addition to Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson and Taissa Farmiga.

Murphy is also directing the film adaptation of Larry Kramer’s Broadway play The Normal Heart for HBO with Julia Roberts and Mark Ruffalo.

  1. I’m at a loss how this will be interesting. 5 people having straight and gay simulated sex 24/7? Perhaps

Anyway, I’m a fan of his work, so hopefully it’ll be good. I used to be obsessed with Nip/Tuck, and I’m more than excited for AHS Coven. But The New Normal was horrible and Glee has been destroyed.

  2. This will be a rather predictable homo-erotic drama. It’ll be provocative and enthralling in the first couple of episodes then just downhill from there.

    1. Queer as Folk was homoerotic and engaging for years, but of course it wasn’t Murphy’s. Ditto the first few seasons of The L Word. When Murphy gets it right he is fantastic, but there have been others -including The New Normal- that are a hot mess. I still can’t go past the carver season of Nip / Tuck.
