Former TEN journalist Brett Mason has been appointed as SBS’ first European Correspondent.
Mason was recently TEN’s Euro correspondent and has been with TEN since 2006. He has over ten year’s experience covering such news stories as the London riots, the Norwegian massacre, the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and the eurozone crisis.
Paul Cutler, Director of News and Current Affairs, SBS, said: “Having a correspondent on the ground in London will give SBS greater and faster access to stories in the United Kingdom and Europe as they unfold, building on our capacity to provide true Australian context and perspectives for our audiences.
“Brett is a journalist of the highest calibre, with exceptional reporting and camera skills, and will work across all platforms to ensure our viewers, listeners and internet users are fully informed on the big stories. During his time in Europe, Brett has developed a deep understanding of political, economic and social issues across the region, and a broad range of important contacts.”
Mason is based in London.
David Knox blogs Eurovision for SBS.

Good pickup for SBS….very nice young man…good at his job….I like SBS news…just says it like it is…
ElleP, good point! I wonder where SBS News’ London office will based? Perhaps with CNN or Al Jazeera?
Perhaps one explanation for Brett’s move to SBS is Jim Carroll. Jim offered Brett the European post when he was the head of News at Ten. I’m sure now that he’s the head of News and Current Affairs at SBS, Jim’s only too keen to bring across some of the talent that he nurtured. Of course it probably helps that Ten has viciously cut staff numbers in the news room twice in the past two years.
Good to see him with a station that has news credibility, unlike TEN these days. Credibility, quality and TEN don’t do in the same sentence.
Why is he no longer with TEN? Well, didn’t they hire 100 extra news people, then fired more than that number when they changed their mind?
@jezza: because Ten ‘forgot’ to renew his contract for the past few months. A great opportunity came around, he gave Ten his notice on Friday and today he’s with SBS. Easy.
A fantasic appointment for SBS. I’ve got no idea why he’s moving over to SBS but every time i’ve seen him on Ten he’s very professional, speaks well with no umming and doesn’t take long pauses before each word spoken. A big loss for Ten
@jezza: Who cares? Would you wanna work at Ten? Good for him. I’m starting to watch SBS news more and more now for some reason.
Why is he no longer with ten?
