TEN sorry for missing end of US Masters

Golf fans fume at TEN after it drops Live coverage of the US Masters for a replay of a Kid's drama filmed in NZ.

2013-04-13_2053TEN has apologised to golf fans after ending Live coverage of the US Masters before the tournament had concluded yesterday morning.

Fans were fuming when coverage of lead player Aussie Jason Day was cut short with 2 holes to go. Instead TEN screened a replay of  Paradise Cafe, a BBC kid’s drama filmed in New Zealand.

In a statement the network said, “Network TEN acknowledges that it was not an opportune time to leave the US Masters coverage this morning but due to contractual commitments to other programming this was unavoidable. TEN apologises to golf fans who missed the last of day two action.”

The problem arose because TEN was caught between slow play at Augusta and its scheduled programme of C programming at 9:30am. That meant TEN was unable to continue the coverage into scheduling that had been classified for Children.

In Augusta players finished approximately 35 minutes later than the previous day with a penalty handed to 14 year old Chinese player Tianlang Guan for slow play. It’s been almost 10 years since a player in a golfing major has been penalized for slow play.

On Twitter and Facebook, fans vented their anger:

Channel 10 just cut the US Masters coverage off to show something called Paradise Cafe. WTF? Why bother even securing the rights you idiots.

Vent your displeasure to @tensporttv after they pull the US Masters’ coverage to show kids TV while an Aussie leads. #pathetic #disgraceful

@tensporttv and you wonder why you’re ratings are shit #usmasters #cutshort #paradisecafe

And Channel 10 wants to get the AFL and Cricket? Not likely after today’s Masters Bungle! #channel10 #badtv #usmasters

@channelten proving again why free to air shouldn’t be allowed the rights to major events #usmasters why pay for it if you don’t show it?

What a bunch of B graders – Channel Ten leave the golf with Day playing 18, pathetic #USMasters

@tensporttv “All sport, every minute…across Ten and ONE”. Treating sports fans with contempt & proving why FTA is embarrassing. #usmasters

I luv you so much #channel10 but you dropped the ball with the #usmasters coverage BIG TIME! Disappointed!

Ch10 if your not going to show the leader finish his round f*** off and give the rights to @FOXSportsAUS #usmasters #goaussies

How poor of Channel Ten to not show leader Aussie Jason Day play last 2 holes..Dora the explorer was more important..

Channel 10 fail. Jason Day is in the lead at the US Masters with two shots to play on 18 and the coverage is wrapped up. I call bullshit!

@channelten seriously! Jason Dsy is leading & in the last group & we don’t get to see it! How long do you have the rights? #usmasters

What rubbish. Of course you’re not sorry. Your prior form in your treatment of F1 viewers is testament to the contempt with which you hold your sports viewers.

Why didn’t you put it on One… Stupid

Typical slack commitment to sport. It’s like showing the Formula 1 qualifying in HD on One, then putting the actual race on the SD channel. Idiots.

Channel one when started was it not allocated as a mainly sport channel why not use is like it, it has hardly any sport on it now and it’s rubbish ten u suck and should not have sport at all

You have how many channels? Work it out morons

To the channel ten boss. I hereby give you notice of my intention to take over the head programming roll. I have no experience what so ever however can guarantee I will single handedly bring your station back from the brink of collapse as I sure as hell know what the viewers want to see………

You have a dedicate sports channel and don’t use it as such. You have been doing the same for F1…

Ten, Do us all a favour and make One HD the sport channel it used to be. Australia is crying out for a free to air sports channel and you nearly had it.

How about showing nothing but sport on ONE ..as you heavily promoted when it started as a full sports channel…

TEN isn’t planning on getting caught out again.

“TEN confirms that coverage of the final two rounds will continue live until conclusion of those rounds. In light of the unfortunate circumstances and slow play that occurred we are also reviewing our policies to ensure we minimise chances of this ever happening again,” a spokesperson said.

“With Jason Day leading and Marc Leishman, Adam Scott and John Senden in contention, we look forward to an exciting couple of days of golf.”

  1. This is rubbish spin from TEN. All the commercial networks have always been allowed to displace C programming to other timeslots, as long as the displaced C program is screened within 7 days with an appropriate announcement going to air when displaced. The recently updated Codes of Practice even enable the fulltime shifting/displacement of what was solely main channel C programming obligations to digital channels. Nine and Seven did exactly this on January 1. If TEN were to take this logic, sorry, breaking news would not be allowed such as 9/11 or coverage would cease so as to screen C programming contractual commitments. No wonder TEN has lost the plot!

  2. Disgraceful work. Children’s time rules allow for such overruns, provided they are reported to the ABA within 24 hours and re-scheduled accordingly. Happens occasionally with cricket, tennis and other sports.

I would suggest that a whole new generation of transmission controllers needs to familiarise themselves with the current regulations, or pick up the phone to someone who does??

  3. I guess David’s article….’Less golf planned for TEN’….really says it all about their attitude to golf!….not that I am a golfer….but many I know are not happy.

  4. A member of Media Spy has found the clause in the TV regulations from ACMA that makes provision for C classified programming to be bumped in the event of a sports broadcast running overtime, as sports broadcasts are deemed allowable viewing by a general audience.

  5. [Headline] ” Communications is a key component for Hamish Mclennan”, April 13th Tvtonight.

[quote] “The most insightful thing that I could say that as an industry, the free-to-air market is one of the few very powerful media that can deliver large audiences and effective “Brand” communication. [end quote]. April 13th Tvt.

So to all those who have complained about the golfing coverage debarcle, “Ten” were just effectively communicating their well earned “Own Brand”, and in true Ten’s typical style, virtually telling no doubt a very “Large Audience” that they can all get “S******.”

Mr Mclennan should possibly have included several other key components, again also ironically all starting with ‘C’……

  6. Ten’s Masters coverage has always been dreadful. They take the US coverage then go late to ads and put extra ads in so you miss a lot of the action in the golf.

Then they have their own hopeless commentators do Aussie updates and you miss 10 minutes an hour of the live golf.

I gave up watching it a couple of years ago. Fox Sports replays the 4 hours of the US FTA coverage of the afternoon and you can watch it without having to get out of bed early.

Ten have always gone to regular programming on their main channel when the golf runs past the scheduled time. They make more money by running their regular morning shows and not disrupting its viewers

They used to dump the Golf to One when that happened though.

  7. So, the golf couldn’t continue until 10:10, followed by scheduled C programs, with a cut-down “The Doctors”, or some other “filler”? Or can’t golf be aired in C time? (LOL).
“due to contractual commitments to other programming this was unavoidable”. What rubbish.
But “we are also reviewing our policies”. What strange “policies” TEN must have these days. Imagine if the Nine co-ordinator had done this in Kerry Packer’s days?

  8. Rubbish excuse – they have no problem overrunning recording programming in the evening and the first rule of broadcasting any major sporting event is you broadcast it through to conclusion. It doesn’t take much forward planning to construct the schedule in such a way it allows for the sort of unexpected overruns you can expect with live sport.

  9. I can understand then having to switch programing on the main channel but why couldn’t they just move the coverage to ONE and preempt other programing.

I thought the multi channels was meant to stop this.

  10. For non-sport lovers this happens to our shows all the time. When the tennis was on, in January, there was a show being played, went off to an ad, had only 5 mins to go (which announced a winner), and then it disappeared so tennis could be put on.

    Not impressed.

  11. No foresight, no contingency, you can understand why golf fans got a little frustrated and also see why ch10s troubles persist
