Which Aussie shows changed global TV history?

4 Aussie shows make the cut of a list of TV shows that changed the history of the international industry.

2013-04-11_1043Organisers of the MIP TV industry market in Cannes have been teasing us with their list of the Top 50 Shows that changed the history of the industry.

From the 1960s to today, they have listed 50 shows including 4 Australian* that make the cut.

* two were overseas formats, but it was the Aussie execution that transformed them.

1985
Neighbours
Seven – Australia – Fremantle Media
The longest-running Australian soap and one of Australia’s greatest exports. Currently in its 29th season on Australian channel Eleven, the show is also being shown daily in the UK for fans of the day-to-day lives and loves of the residents of the street where Kylie Minogue’s career started.

Home & Away
Seven – Australia – Endemol
The youngest and most popular Australian daily soap explores the trials and tribulations of a fictional beachside town seemingly populated by hunks and hotties blessed by a fantastic climate. Summerbay habitants are also hot on some other shores, especially in the UK where they appear daily on Channel 5.

Seven – Australia – Banijay International

  1. What about Number 96 with the Don Finlayson character which caused a total change in attitude to homosexuals in Australia? Not to mention the fact Number 96 went on to spawn Melrose Place which helped establish FOX as a serious TV network in the US and was a hit show all over the world.

    1. No 96 is a good pick as promiscuous TV and the first sympathetic gay character anywhere in the world. Gav and Waz on The Block also added shifts to social attitudes. I don’t think we can link 96 to Melrose though. There is no evidence Melrose was inspired by 96.

  2. Unfortunately “change” is not the same as “improve”.

    Many things change history, but this doesn’t automatically imply anyone wants to see them revisited. The Black Death springs to mind, though comparing it to reality tv is a little unfair to diseases everywhere.

  3. Today Tonight and ACA should be on the list for showing the same stories every four weeks, and still hitting the million viewer mark every night. 😉
