Adam Boland teases on new breakfast project

TEN's Adam Boland dares to be different with his next Breakfast TV project.

TEN Adam Boland 1On the weekend TEN’s Director of Morning Television Adam Boland spoke to Fairfax about his upcoming plans for a new breakfast TV show.

The former Sunrise guru is understood to have been given free rein to create his next project with no pressure on deadlines.

Boland acknowledges the big ask taking on his former show and Nine’s Today, but is relishing the chance to draft a format from scratch.

“When you see the concepts, I absolutely will deliver on the promise to be different and reflect society in 2013 … If I can’t do that, well, they can laugh me out of town,” he said.

“Most of all it’s just a super-cool challenge for me – this is the happiest I’ve been professionally in a while.”

Boland took Sunrise to an unassailable position during his time at Seven but his final years were creatively frustrating.

”If I can replicate even some of that success I’ll be happy. I’m not building up expectations; these are tough competitors and I know them well, but at the same time I’m pretty tough and I back myself that if I can build the right team and make the right show, this will shake things up. I do see this as a new beginning for TEN…… it’s a happy and exciting place to be.”

You can be certain the show will tap into social media but just how it does this beyond the usual isn’t yet clear.

”A lot of speculation has been way off the mark but I strongly suspect there will be an element of shock with some of the stuff. There are still the basic rules of breakfast … like the news updates every half-hour. We won’t rewrite the basic rules but how we present the show will be completely different.”

Despite the horrendous hours, there’s no shortage of names to be considered.

Dare we name the new project Good Morning Australia?

  1. As an avid “The Circle” viewer, I am sincerely hoping you will bring back a “Circle” type show rather than a boring run of the mill copycat morning show!!!! Come on Adam, be bold and take a leap of faith! There are many of us that stuck together after the demise of a fantastic show that was crushed by total mismanagement of programming at channel 10! Your expertise could revive our belief that good will come to those who wait, and believe me, we have been waiting and hoping you can be the saviour of such a fantastic show that meant so much to so many! Bring back a breathe of fresh air to Australian morning TV!!!

  2. Dear Mr Bolland
I would really like you to consider bringing back a morning show to our screens like our beloved Circle. Oh how we miss this show and our buddies each morning. There is a group of us on facebook who just long for a morning show to be reintroduced in a similar format. No not all of us stay at home mums, but people who could relate to Chrissie, Yumi, Gorgi, Meshel and Denise as they were down to earth, honest, funny and downright good fun to watch. Please Mr Bolland, please bring our Circle or a morning show in a similar format.
Please take the time to read and consider. Thanking you Megsie

  3. What ever adam bolland is doing just hurry up and put it to air ten desperately needs new programming . Your not reinventing the wheel its a breakfast show make it fun and entertaining put it on from 6am to 10am a shop front studio like darling harbour not a crappy studio set like the last breakfast show on ten . I cant stand the today show with that disgusting orange set bring lots of fun with lots of viewer interraction and then bring on the circle from 10am loved that show. Its simple.

  4. I would recommend a 2 hour live feed of Kittycam from the Perth Cat Haven. It’s new, refreshing, colourful, takes no brainpower to watch, cost nothing to produce and the stars know what they are doing when they put their foot (paw) in their mouth. A perfect blend of FTA and internet technologies.

Trust me on this, it’ll be a winna !

  5. 10 listen to what your loyal viewers want & need back on their screens!! The amazing cast & crew were/are incredibly talented & real! Nothing else like it & there never will be unless you act now!

  6. I think TEN should have childrens shows (From ages 3 to 7) between 6 & 9am then have something like “The Circle” after 9am

11am for those viewers “Days Of Our Lives” even that the ratings were very low when it was on Nine

  7. Definitely need our ‘Circle’ type mornings back. So so many of us went into a depressive state when the demise happened. Luckily there is a FB group called The Circle Fan Page where many hundreds of us support each other. The group started in March 2012 and has been operating ever since with great success. However we need our local program back so we are counting on you Mr Boland please 🙂

  8. Due to management politics now in play on all networks, and also based on the purely politically influenced early starting date for the failed Paul Henry Political Breakfast Debacle, during Ten’s previous attempt at coming up with a popular viable alternative to Seven and Nine’s offerings.

Perhaps a starting date for any new breakfast programme on network Ten should be delayed till after the 14-9-2013, if it is to have any chance of success at all, considering the same influences who gave us Paul Henry and retained Andrew Bolt for purely political comment/influence, may again spoil any chance for any new breakfast format to succeed, for exactly the same reasons that caused the Paul Henry Epic Failure, and unfortunately similar influences were also slowly creeping into the now cancelled “Circle” programme.

    Here’s a wild concept…. run the show from 7 – 11 and call it Brunch~
Sounds good to me…I would watch that…. 🙂

  10. I don’t know why they bother with another breakfast program, surely two competing programs are more than enough for the relatively small audience, not to mention the ABC’s breakfast. I never watch breakfast TV, I’d far rather listen to the radio.

I would have thought if Adam Boland’s so good, why not deploy him into a night time live show. Anything but a talent show!!

  11. I don’t think they should call the new show Good Morning Australia, rather something new, fresh and exciting that makes young people want to watch. Also to appeal to younger viewers they need younger presenters, people in their 30s or 40s not almost 60 year olds like Kochie.

  12. I hear Paul Henry’s free…

In all seriousness Kathryn Robinson deserves a guernsey for having to sit next to Henry and watch him put both his feet in his mouth and still keep talking.

  13. If anyone can save ten it’s Boland, he and Michael Pell are the kings of producing brilliant morning television. If he has a brain though he will want the show to air until 10am followed by a new, refreshed and relaunched “the circle” both broadcast in the same studio. I also agree that calling it Good Morning Australia would work, the show had a lot of success on ten. there main goal needs to be advertising the new show(s) launch it during the winter games and it will do great.

  14. “This is the happiest I’ve been professionally in a while….Ten is an exciting and happy place to be.”
Are you sure this is the same Adam Boland from 7?

Even Bert Newton mentioned at the Logies that his 14 years at Ten were two of his happiest years.
Good luck mate, you’re going to need it.

  15. Dare I mention “The Circle”!!! There is still a large following asking for the return of a morning show of the same format as “The Circle”. Please don’t give us another version of what is already on other networks. “The Circle” offered so much more to their loyal viewers. So many had such a personal connection to the show….like catching up with your besties, support & understanding for those disconnected from society, empowering some to overcome their social fears, connecting with those with disabilities & the list goes on. There is an ongoing FB fan page that has connected hundreds of loyal viewers who now offer friendship & support to those who felt such a sense of loss when the show was axed. Many celebrities still express their connection with the show & how a show of that unique format should be on our screens.

  16. Don’t generally watch morning television but recall one time watching the today show one Monday morning and it was basically a repeat of the same story shown on sixty minutes the night before. I realise morning tv would have to repeat the same stories but if your main content is a repetition of content from a different program then work needs to be done.

  17. It’s no surprise there is no deadline. Last I saw the ratings for the current morning lineup of import reruns are some of the best ratings ten has ever got in that slot, and the content is probably dirt cheap or free. I don’t see why they have to go ahead with this expensive high risk project at all.
