2013-03-20_1643Updated: New US drama series, Bates Motel, begins later this month on FOX8 but the first episode is already available on the On Demand section of IQ from Monday May 20.

Inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, Bates Motel is a contemporary prequel exploring the dark, twisted world inhabited by Norman Bates and his mother, Norma. In an intimate portrayal of their relationship, viewers will unravel the intricate psyche of Norma, and see firsthand how she creates a son who becomes one of the most well-known serial killers in history.

The one-hour drama series stars Oscar-nominated and award-winning actress Vera Farmiga as Norma, the resilient, intelligent, beautiful and complicated mother of 17-year-old Norman Bates. A contemporary single mother, she is emotionally complex and utterly devoted to her son, constantly juggling her own needs and some hardcore baggage while trying to create a new home in a new town for herself and Norman.

Farmiga is joined by double SAG nomine and Film Critics’ Best Young Actor winner Freddie Highmore who plays the young Norman Bates, a smart, quietly funny, handsome and sometimes shy teenager with an intensely close bond to his mother. Norman is resistant to starting over in a new town, but begins to change his mind as he spreads his wings a little.

Bates Motel has received rave reviews from the US press since its launch on America’s A&E Network, with the premiere episode becoming the most-watched original drama in the key demographics in the network’s history.

Sunday May 26 at 8.30pm.

  1. Bates Hotel is extremely well-crafted schlock horror, elevated by expert casting and a fantastically clever and accomplished performance by Vera Farmiga. She’s as good, if not better than Jessica Lange in American Horror Story – and I’d also be surprised if she doesn’t land an Emmy.

  2. Great show, loving each episode, and with a 10 episode season, they do make the most of each week. Good to see it’s already been renewed for a second season for 2014.

I wonder why its not on A&E, as it is in the US? Perhaps they are reserving Australia’s A&E for the observational series only, and don’t see scripted drama fitting in with the scope they have set out.
