Stirling Mortlock joins TEN

Former Wallaby, Melbourne Rebels and Brumbies captain Stirling Mortlock joins TEN's sports team.

Stirling MortlockFormer Wallaby, Melbourne Rebels and Brumbies captain Stirling Mortlock is the latest addition to TEN’s rugby commentary team, ahead of the 2013 British & Irish Lions Rugby Tour and The Castrol EDGE Rugby Championship.

The announcement follows that of Chief Rugby Commentator Gordon Bray joining in April and former Wallaby Matthew Burke in March.

“I’m extremely excited to be involved with such a great crew covering the upcoming British & Irish Lions Rugby Tour,” he said.

“To be working alongside Gordon Bray, the voice of rugby, is a thrill and a privilege and to be teamed with Matt Burke is something I can’t wait to do. I’m really looking forward to soaking up the atmosphere and electricity around the tour and bringing that to TEN viewers.”

Network TEN Head of Sport, David Barham, said: “We are thrilled to have Stirling Mortlock join TEN’s Rugby commentary team. It is a real coup for fans and viewers. Stirling’s experience and knowledge of the game, coupled with his popularity as a player, will only enhance and complement our live coverage. Alongside Matt Burke and Gordon Bray, they form an unrivalled Rugby commentary trio.”

Mortlock debuts at the first Test between the Qantas Wallabies and the British & Irish Lions on Saturday, June 22.  TEN will broadcast all Wallabies Test matches live nationally until the end of 2015.

  1. All we need now is the full list of matches to be televised. I am disappointed that the six franchise matches will not be shown as well as the three tests. I notice that the commentary also indicates that TEN will televise the Rugby championships, which I take to be the four nations. Aust, NZ,SA & Argt. congratulations if this is true. I have never forgiven the ARU for walking away from a serious opportunity in Free to air by rolling over to Foxtel during the John O’neill reign. The next challenge is the Shute shield as a Saturday programme. I live on the Far North Coast of NSW ,an aged pensioner, who cannot afford Foxtel. I firmly believe that Rugby had in the past sponsors of the decision level standard & their is no reason that they could not be convinced to return.

    Regards Richard Egan.

  2. @Armchair Analyst – thanks for that, I’d assumed that Eales and the rest were Foxtel too for some reason.
I seem to remember that Nine had very few on board for the 2011 World Cup, and resorted to feeds from NZ for all but Australia’s matches.

Thanks. I am sure Ten will broadcast the footage and commentary for the match. This is a great team by Ten and they should hold on to the rights beyond 2015

  4. @ HardcorePrawn. the Nine Network (Nine’s Wide World of Sports) had John Eals as a expert commentator, ussaully with Tim Sherridan, who is not at Nine any more. They were at ground level for the post and pre match thoughts and comments. In the studio they had Ken Sutcliff and Goerge Gregan plus another man who i cant remember the name of. The commentary was provided by the FOX Sports team as well a the footage. This team that Ten has is very good i think just as good of a team that Seven had a decade ago.

  5. “Alongside Matt Burke and Gordon Bray, they form an unrivalled Rugby commentary trio” ??

Not sure about that – Fox Sports have Greg Clark with Wallabies greats Phil Kearns, Tim Horan.
Nathan Sharp, Rod Kafer, Brendan Cannon and Greg Martin.

  6. This is a great bunch for Ten and their commentary team, better than Nine’s commentary team. I hope they sign Bill Woods as well. Ten is the home of the wallabies
