Vale: Jeanne Cooper

Jeanne Cooper, who played matriarch Katherine Chancellor on The Young and the Restless for 40 years, has died.

2013-05-09_1117Veteran US actress Jeanne Cooper, best known as matriarch Katherine Chancellor on The Young and the Restless, has died, aged 84.

Her son, actor Corbin Bernsen, announced the death on his Facebook page, writing that his mother had died in her sleep.

Cooper was the longest-serving cast member of The Young and the Restless, and continued to appear on the show until her death. She joined the show in late 1973, about six months after CBS began broadcasting it.

As Katherine Chancellor, she played the fabulously wealthy matriarch of fictitious Genoa City, with storylines sometimes resembling her own life including her alcoholism and subsequent sobriety, and a face-lift in 1984 with footage of Ms. Cooper’s actual surgery incorporated into the broadcast.

The Young and the Restless is taped about six weeks in advance of US broadcasts, and it has not been determined how her character will be written out of the show.

The soap still airs in Australia on Arena.

  2. Such sad news. Jeanne Cooper was iconic, and Katherine Chancellor was one of those legendary soap characters. She will be greatly missed and I hope that Y&R do a fitting tribute for her.

    RIP Jeanne.

  3. Such an iconic character. Those Kay v Jill battles were legendary! I always loved the relationship between Katherine and Esther.
As a kid, I always used to wonder how she managed to do anything with her hands because of those long fingertails.

    R.I.P Jeanne.
