  1. @ TheMoops I agree with you that last nights Master class was very entertaining. Many posters on here are correct about the house renovating obsession. I for one don’t watch any of them.
Masterchef should be on only once per year and perhaps not against The Block and HR. Sad but it is a very good program and I hope they keep the main version but maybe a different launch date to give it a better chance.

Shaun the sheep is a very entertaining cartoon with plenty of adult humour in it that would go straight over the heads of the little ones.

In one episode the bus driver is the spitting image of the Inspector of the On The Buses comedy from the 70’s, so definitely for the young at heart viewers as well. Not surprised it is rating well. We also have the DVD’s for our grandson to watch during the week.

  2. @bettestreep, I think part of the reason these reno shows are popular is because Australians have always been obsessed with the dream of owning the house on the quarter acre block and all that. Owning property is really an Australian obsession, we are far more preoccupied with it than many other nationalities, so shows about renovating and property/DIY always do well here. I find it amazing that two similar renovating shows can go up against each other and both do so well, but such is the aspirational power of property on the Australian psyche. Also, reality shows are a programming fad that shows no sign of abating.

  3. @ghgh, God, how could I forget that the Block was a revived show- thanks for the reminder! The Mole is being revived, yes, but it remains to be seen whether it will be a ratings success. We all know what happened with Young Talent Time and HHIS!!

  4. bettestreep2008

Instead of resting MC, Ten should just have one series per year.

I remember when Seven had two series of DWTS in one year and eventually ratings dropped.

Don’t understand the popularity of The Block or House Rules though.

The Block has had two series this year and is rating through the roof – and the very similar House Rules is also rating well competing almost directly against it.

I think Ten management thought that two reno shows at the same time would mean viewers would tire of the concept and rush to a cooking show.

Sadly there are so many cooking shows on right now – viewers are not flocking to it.

A real shame though because I’ve been watching it and it is a high quality production with a lovely diverse group of contestants and a couple of hot spunks to spice things up.

Ten should consider the next series for September 2014 – a decent break from this series.

  5. ghghgh20_211

ummm, the block was on previously, then went away (i know it wasn’t rested but canceled) but look at it now.

it is getting great ratings and people are loving it again. i’m sure the same can happen to MC if we rest it.

  6. @Ghgg…
Yeah sure! Just every year the same shows and subsequently crying because the market gets more and more inflexible.

Why not being bold like ch10? At least they try hard

  7. @Sunny, here in NSW there is a half hour overlap with the Block and HR. Block starts at 7pm, HR starts at 7.30pm.

@ghgh, I can’t think of one show that has been rested, then had a successful return. This year, MC has been unfortunate enough to run into very stiff competition from not one, but two reno shows, hence its ratings have been cannibalised – severely. The audience was always going to eventually tire of it, anyway, as Ten has flogged the format to within an inch of its life. It should never be on more than once a year. Its demise has been coming for a while, the audience is tired of it.

  8. what do people think of the idea of resting masterchef for at least 2 years…then bringing it back in 2016.

people will be hungering for it. even if MKR is still on, MC will come back bigger and stronger.

people are just tired of the format of it.

  9. I don’t know about other states, but in Queensland where I live, The Block and HR are on at different times. TB is 7.00 to 8.00pm and HR 8.00 to 9.15pm, so they don’t directly compete. Probably those who don’t want to watch the Footy Show switch over to HR, thus giving HR a boost in ratings. Having said all that, I actually only watched the ABC and SBS last night.

  10. HR beat The Block due to the pox on anything-Nine in Adelaide & Perth. Same with News and ACA/TT.
Nine is to the west as TEN is to the east. The great unwatched. With Nine now owning Perth will be interesting to see if/when any improvement.

  11. The only thing wrong with HR was the launch.
TB is just a kiddie show with mindless challenges, excessive product placements, and annoying personalities.
    Meanwhile MC…

  12. Dave, have you done a review of Shaun the Sheep yet? It must be good – more than twice as many people are watching it as did The Americans on Monday.
